Hi Guys!

I am considering upgrading out 384kbps line to a 4mbit.

What is the chances of me getting proper speeds on it?
I know a lady who installed her 4mbit 1km away and she only gets 2.5mbit download.

The problem with our current Adsl line is that I don't think the upload is working very well.. I guess we have 128kbps max on the 384 kbps adsl line.

Will we get a decent upload speed on 4mbit adsl or will it still be the same? 50% of the reason for my upgrade is so that skype will work without a hitch!

My aunt says she strugles with skyping to her daughter Overseas so she had to phone via Telkom!!

I am considering installing a VOIP Phone and signing up with Voip Rader or some VOIP Specialist company.

Is it possible to downgrade from 4mbit to 384 If we aren't happy with the speeds?

Regards

Paste your modem's attennuation/noise margin stats and then we can see if your line can theoretically sync at 4Mbps or not. As for your upload speeds, 128k (up) is the locked standard of a 384kbps (down) line so you shouldn't be expecting more than that anyway. Once you're on 4Mbit you should have 512kbps (around 45KB/s) upload speeds

Hi Tweak. 128kbps is the normal upload speed for a 384kbps line. Yes, you can downgrade from 4Mbps back to 384, but you'll have to pay a R450 (I think) downgrade fee. Maybe you could also post your router stats that we can get a better idea of your current line quality.

EDIT: fragtion_ beat me to it.

Phone Telkom and ask them to let their CTS section test your line before your apply for the upgrade.

R450 downgrade fee? WHAT

Bastids!

I have a month to month contract. Can't I just cancel my contract for one month and just sign up again with 384 kbps?
