4MBPS ADSL Line Only Connecting at 1MBPS

Hey guys

After months of struggling I finally got Telkom to install my ADSL line today.
They replaced the cables to the exchange last week and completed my installation today, however my 4MBPS ADSL line is only connecting at 1MBPS in my router.

I ordered a 4MB line and they installed it on 2MB and it was also only synchronizing at 1MB, then finally after over 2 hours on the phone with them today, I got them to change it to 4MB and they did reset the port, yet I'm still only getting a 1MB connection speed :(

Is there anyone that can help me get my line speed to synchronize at a better speed or advise why the line is doing this?
I am using an ASUS N55U ADSL Router.

Also, your attenuation and signal to noise indicate that your line is shiit.
 
What Sinbad said, you're approximately 4.6km away from the exchange and will at most, in a perfect world, get 1.8Mbps.

Generally your attenuation is related to your distance from the exchange. The higher it is, the "quieter" the signal from the exchange is. This obviously affects signal to noise ratio - with any interference on the line being "louder" in comparison to the signal.
SNR of 6 is about the absolute minimum for a stable connection.

How far are you from the exchange?

I am unsure of this as Telkom fails to give me an exact distance. The technician that came out at first said it's approximately 5KM's from the exchange

Line attenuation is a measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. This is largely a function of the distance from the exchange. The lower the dB, the better for this measurement. Attenuation is logarithmic and each 3dB of attenuation halves the strength of the signal power received.

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

The standard signal attenuation spread for a given speed is somewhere in the region of 15-20dB for ADSL2/2+ speeds and 25-30dB for ADSL1 speeds. The following is a "guesstimate" of the line attenuation and maximum attainable speed based on distance:

Less than 1km = 24Mbit
1.0km = 13.81dB = 23Mbit
1.5km = 20.7dB = 21Mbit
2.0km = 27.6dB = 18Mbit
2.5km = 34.5dB = 13Mbit
3.0km = 41.4dB = 8Mbit
3.5km = 48.3dB = 6Mbit
4.0km = 56dB = 4Mbit
4.5km = 62.1dB = 3Mbit
5.0km = 69dB = 2Mbit

I think you're pretty much stuffed until they roll out MSANs into your area :/
 
The only thing you can do is wait for them to install a MSAN close to you or move to a house close to the current exchange. Save yourself some money and just go for a 2Mbps line.
 
Contact Telkom and tell them to drop you back to a 2Mbps connection (save your money). If you have an uncapped service, drop this to a 2Mbps account as well.
 
One thing I have to ask is, do you have a POTS filter installed and/or running your phone line through one of those included "power adapter lightning strike protection" stuff? The modem Telkom gave me had that, and I set it up to go through there as I'm skittish about lightning frying my equipment, however I noticed a LOT of noise generated through it, so I just run it straight through the POTS filter and into the modem

I am not running the line through any filter :)

I have done this now. After testing with Telkom the attenuation stays exactly the same when the line is on 4MB, 2MB and 1.5MB.
Will stick it out with the 1MB connection speed. Apparently they are busy with the exchange upgrades but no definite ETA for the area's exchange here.

At least I am getting good pings in Black Ops 2 for now :D

Believe me the same is happening to me. See my attached pic. I also moved house. Saw one Telkom Box close by.
Found out yesterday it was a trail version bout never worked properly. That means I'm in the same boat. For me it is a knife edge.
I also have degraded line. I'm 4km away from the exchange.

I will see over time when the line degrades what will happen. My exchange received the other day a upgrade before I moved. This will not happen soon here currently. So the next upgrade to 10Mbps I will have to sit out.

At least I'm compiling data to what my line currently can do.
