4mbps in my area?

Slight update on this saga...

Telkom have installed the ADSL (512k) on my line... Not too bad all things considered.

Speed-wise, I am a bit disappointed, but perhaps my expectations were a bit high. Gamco and speedtest.net both report about 415k/210k . I guess I was expecting just a little closer to the rated speed of 512k/256k. Still, my latency is good and stable, so all-in-all I am happy enough.

I tried to phone through to start the upgrade process to 4mb, but until they have closed off the current order, they cannot do so. I'm told I have to wait 24 hours for the current order to be marked as "completed". Grrr.

haha :D

Congratulations. And 415/210 isn't bad at all, so don't be too miffed :)

At least they did it fairly quickly!

Final update (hopefully).

I placed the order for the 4mb upgrade yesterday. As expected, the consultant didn't hold out much hope anything happening in the near future, but I told them to proceed regardless and decided to just be patient.

Last night, I was downloading a file and thought I'd check and see how quick it was coming down... It was FLYING down at a peak of 425kB/sec!

This is me now:

So, that was quick... Obviously the exchange DOES support 4mb in my area, so the moral of the story is, don't believe what their "system" tells you if you ever decide that you want 4mb ADSL. Just go ahead with the order anyway and keep your fingers crossed.

Hmmmmm....

How did you get them to even try the upgrade???

Each time I phone, and ask to be upgraded to closer 5 (currently on 512k line and closer 3) they say they will check if we can upgrade.

When they check they come back with "Your exchange only supports 512k line, sorry"....they wont even *try* to upgrade me!

I did a self install...and before they "activated" the line by clicking that link....it was syncing at 2MB....frustrating as it may actually work...

How did you do it?

Perhaps in your case they have already done whatever "testing" is required and it genuinely isn't supported in your area? Though then I suppose it wouldn't sync at 2mb. A 4mb line is "officially" a 1mb service with Telkom, so it's strange that they don't offer you at least 1mb.

My entire ordeal is chronicled in this thread, so go back and read from post #1 if you are interested in how it all went down.

Hmmmm..... maybe I should try and make some noise then....

Their "testing" is me waiting on the phone for a minute while they "check" on their systems....

Maybe they're too lazy to attempt to test it properly.... wish me luck!

Sometimes saying, "But I was told that..." forces them to do things they otherwise would not have tried.

Try saying, "I realise that your system says my area doesn't support 4096k, but I was told that I should put through the order anyway and wait to see what comes of it."

I agree. Ask them to send out a technician just to be certain. Couldn't hurt :D
