For the longest time, 4Mbps was the max availlable in my area. A few days ago, Telkom did some work on the exchange that I am connected to and since yesterday my 4Mbps line is syncing at 5117kbps. Does this mean the exchange was upgraded to 8Mbps (in line with the HomeUnlimited plans line upgrades) and it is just syncing low or is ASSIA just giving my line a blip for some reason?

Probably ASSIA unless your other stats changed, specifically Attenuation.

No, it does not mean your exchange or DSLAM has been upgraded. I've been syncing at 5 for a while now, but can only get 4Mbps.

Attentuation is steady at 30dB, which is the same as before.

SNR used to be 13~14dB but it has gradually increase to 25dB and has stayed there,

Well if you were syncing @ 4096k before on ADSL1 and now synching @ 5117k on ADSL2+ then it just means the mode has changed from ADSL1 to ADSL2+ but does not necessarily mean the dslam has been upgraded.

Check the website to see if it's available. With your line stats as it is now if the dslam does support higher speeds you should have no trouble in getting 10Mbps.

Its definitely an upgrade from DSLAM to MSAN...DSLAM supports both ADSL 1 and ADSL 2+..but does not support ASSIA..The increase in SNR is proof of that..OP looking at your stats with the help of ASSIA you would be able to upgrade to 12mb no problem, assuming you are not a gamer ofc...the increase in ping causes major problems with gaming and sometimes packet loss will make it unplayable.

Not true in most cases.

My exchange can handle way more than 4mbps, but I'm connected to some mini ATM which can only do 4mbps. Yet look at the stats.

fair enough, but how do you know if they haven't rerouted your cable or replaced the main Copper cable from the MSAN to the ISAM with Fibre?. ISAM's , if I'm not mistaken do support Fibre backhaul...ASSIA looks good on paper, but is utter crap.

When you search your DSLAM, does it say you are connected to a ISAM or MSAN?..ASSIA will show you 5120kbps, if you do a speed test your down rate should be about 3990 - 4000kbps...if so then you should be able to upgrade..try asking a local telkom tech, they are usually much more clued up with this then the call centre

If your download is more than 3.4 ... yes you can upgrade.

When I search on the SAIX noticeboard, it says my DSLAM is a ISAM. I know upgrades were done last week but according to the Telkom site I still only have 4Mbps in my area.

This morning my downstream sync dropped to 4607kbps which is probably my dodgy router and ASSIA.

Looks like you can get faster speeds. Where is that old toppie called Mickey something...

What does "RST" means?

RST is in name of the exchange.

The exchange itself is a cream-coloured cabinet with POTS, ADSL1, ADSL2+ NICs.
