Here's hoping somebody can help, I fear the worst

Recently moved premises, only 600m, but it meant moving to a new exchange, at the same time I went from mweb 384k uncapped to 4mbps uncapped, the line seems fine (stats below), but the throughput is DOG slow. I don't hear any line noise through a handset either. Suspected mweb is shaping me to hell and gone so I tested with a prepaid WebAfrica account too, same dog slow result at various times of day. Ping seems quite healthy by ZA standards, but throughput SUCKS.

The techie that activated my ADSL said I'm quite far from the exchange, yet the line stats seem ok? AFAIK there also isn't any maintenance or some such going on at the exchange or ISP etc.

The only thing I can think of to still test is connecting to the router with an actual cable instead of the current wireless setup, just in case the problem lies there. If anyone can help I'd be one happy camper, all kinds of vital info below:

Router: Telkom 5102g (latest firmware from Billion so the config page now says Billion, not Telkom)
Exchange: Tableview (021 557 xxxx)
Line StatsDownUp
SNR Margin12.0 db11.8 db
Line Attenuation47.0 db32.3 db

Try to do a speed test at like 02:00 or 06:00, because that should verify contention issues if you get like 4Mbps download speed.

I find it very odd that your ping tests show low latencies.

Maybe try a cheap D-Link DSL-2500U router. That sorted out my initial problems with slow ADSL.

well, took my work laptop home with a fly-lead all ready to keep testing, and I would have done a test at ~3am as well, only one problem ... my phone line is currently completely dead, not even voice, nada, F@#$ you telkom!!!

line back up after 36 hours of the fault being logged, testing resumes this weekend ... but now I'm the proud owner of intermittent, audible line noise

on the upside amobia has done a site survey and has confirmed I've got good signal strength ...

mystery solved

Ok,

My wireless connection in the house is the culprit, connecting via cable yields VASTLY superior results. Maybe new router and/or adapter time if switching channels doesn't work I guess? My time to try wireless 'n' protocol? Anyone know where to get the best prices (and actual stock) of the Linksys WAG120N or its siblings?

I had the exact same problem a week ago because my router uses 40mhz in order to get 270mhz. Someone setup a new wireless network somewhere and it ended up being in the middle of my 40mhz. I used inSSIDer from metageek.net to make a graph and then moved to another channel after changing my wifi to 20mhz. Give it a try. In my case I now get 140 mbps to the router instead of 270 mbps which is no biggy. Still better than using 802.11b which maxes out on 11mbps ;)
