I am considering subscribing to the truly uncapped internet IS account even though it retails for over R3000. My question is whether I would get 4mbps on the 1024kbps offering? That might make it worth my while because R3000 is insanely expensive. On the other hand, a 3 gig account is just totally useless. And lastly, is it worth signing a 12 month contract for this or are the prospects for better offerings in the pipeline?

No, you wont get 4mbit speed on a 1024 uncapped account. You might get that speed locally, but its def not guaranteed for intl downloads.

Two clients of mine have the 1024 IS uncapped ADSL solution in place and I have been very disappointed with the performance. Even with only one user using the line, I have never gotten more than 60k/sec HTTP download speed, usually it's even lower.

I have 2 1Mbit IS fibre uncapped lines at work and they rock! (CPT based)
International latency is incredible 180 - 230ms and only 5/6 hops to the UK.

we also trialled the 4Mbit option late last year for a month free - and my experience was no different. Full speed access on torrents HTTP FTP woteva... local and intl.

to answer your question - it is doubtful you would get 4Mbit access on that account.
But realistically IS is the only real tier1 provider that has these sorts of accounts available, and now with Neotel in the picture - and seemingly providing the un-contended international circuit on the SAT-3 cable - you cant go wrong.

But make sure you are getting the option that states FIBRE!

O and AFAIK the pricing on the 1Mbit Fibre uncapped access came down this year to around R26xx.00 or somewhere around there (don`t quote me on this)

as far as I know you the router they install is limited in speed and not the line itself. also note that they'll slow down your access if you do more than x GB in 24-48 hours. not sure of the specifics but read the fine print.

If you do less than 10gb and you want it for gaming like WoW its a bit expensive. I'd rather not waste my money for an uncapped solution until the new cables are done

++ great post, agreed with what's said here. if capacity isn't the greatest factor though, then verizon and saix unshaped accounts are also great when it comes to international latency...

I have the uncapped at work and is really worth it we got on average about 750 gig a month with our line running 2 concurrent connections and use the same username at home as well as at work. and international with usenext we get our 4mb and also with some P2P options we do get our 4mb which i do not understand cos you only suppose to have a 1mb int and 4mb local can someone please explain that to me cos i download at a average of 420kb/s at work and at home i get about 250kb/s to 350kb/s????

lol well thats mainly me hehehehe..... wont say what I download every month hehehehehe lets put it this way a 750gig drive is part of my groceries now days

Hehe I think know what it is ;) What's the next lan you're going to? I could do with some new educational material :D

there is no more need for lans for me anymore hehehehehe.... lol i do on average bout 35 gigs a day of downloads hehehehe so lans are waist of time for me i get more out my adsl than what i do out of lans

/me searches for that news article that was on mybroadband.co.za awhile back where IS details some of the heavier accounts on there network.
I have the capacity - and rarely get anywhere near 100GB myself p/m and overall our network probably averages around 180GB +/-
So you must fall into those 'excessive usage accounts' they were talking about :)

But basically labrat - I think a 1Mbit uncapped is probabaly the only viable option for you.
You couldnt afford the 4Mbit uncapped - and would probably cause the whole country to suffer as a result.

I was so dissapointed with 1024 IS uncapped I switched to a SIAX high cap account. IS uncapped has a 7 day rolling throttle if you exceed 10GB in 7 days you throttled to 512 for the rest of the 7 day period. The speed and uptime also suck. I have heard that the IS fibre uncapped is much better, I am trying to get IS to trail it for a week at my office.
And no the 1024 uncapped does not get 4Mb speeds if you lucky you might get 640

Some business ADSL info

Hi all

there are different IS Business ADSL products, I think there is some confusion
here about them.

here is a list
IS Business ADSL Express
IS Business ADSL 512Kbps Sat
IS Business ADSL 1024Kbps Sat
IS Business ADSL 512Kbps Fibre
IS Business ADSL 1024Kbps Fibre
IS Business ADSL >1024Kbps GB options 5GB, 10GB, 50GB, 100GB Sat, 100GB, 150GB, 200GB, 300GB

All Business ADSL products except the Express option come with a router, 5 static ip's, fax2email and antispam. I will discuss the express option later

Fibre = low international latency costs more
Sat = high international latency costs less
and as per your line speed only 512Kbps and 1024Kbps are available
Then I am not 100% sure but they are all unshaped and allow all protocols
then I have also heard that only p2p is shaped during office hours only could
someone confirm ?

for those with a line speed greater than 1024Kbps there are the GB options
all sizes are over fibre with the 100GB available on fibre or Sat
if you exceed the allocated amount of traffic then the line is limited to
128Kbps until the end of the month.

Express option is an uncapped option with no router or static ip's or extra's
what happens is if you exceed
15GB on a 384Kbps line
30GB on a 512Kbps line
60GB on a 1024Kbps line
you get rate limited to half your line speed. What happens after that is what i'm not 100% sure about, what I understand is that in the next 10 days if you do not exceed
5GB on a 384Kbps line
10GB on a 512Kbps line
20GB on a 1024Kbps line
the half line speed rate limit is removed

you can't put an uncapped option on a 4096Kbps line you have to
use the express option or the GB options, all are only available on a 12 month
contract and have a setup fee. the express option does not have a setup fee
and I'm not sure if it is on a contract or not.

hope this helps as often the features/limitations of products are not explained
I say limitations because if you want to download 180GB's then this would be a limitation for you on the express option, For some business's just being online permanently is a must have so to them this is a great feature.

pm me if you want the overview doc's of the products
