Just did this upgrade today, comparing with my pre-348Kbps ... On downloads, i haven't seen anythin above 150KB/S ... sometimes get the same 30-40KB/s i got from 384 ... don wanna pay so much for nothing major

Check what speed your router is syncing at.

If it's 4096,then you are syncing at 4mb. If not, then your line cannot handle 4mbit, or speak to a techie to ask them to do tests to see if it is stable on 4mb.

Also multi-threading will make a huge difference in download speeds.

Using IE's "save target as" for example uses a single download thread, which sometimes gets me 5KB/s lol!

Using IDM (www.internetdownloadmanager.com), i get my full line speed of 4mbit on most downloads if the server supports it :)

Moral of the story, get a good download manager with multi-threaded download support such as IDM (not free) or DAP (http://www.speedbit.com/ - free). I have only tested IDM

For browsing though, you should notice a big speed difference. I know SAIX is having a problem with it's ADSL today and there has been slow browsing (I am a victim), but usually it's really nippy!

If you are not using Firefox, I also recommend that as it's a good fast browser much quicker than IE from personal experience)

Firstly I would edit out your IP address for security reasons.

Secondly, where did you do the test? I will do one from the same site and post results to compare. Do one on www.speedtest.net with JHB as the selected server as well to compare.

What is your router syncing at? (type the router IP in the address bar e.g. 10.0.0.2)

Not my best, but not bad either.

Or you could just post the direct image link.

Sounds ok. Your line is most probably syncing at +-3 meg

And if you want help try answering my questions please.

Where do i check that on my router (10.0.0.2)?

Where do i check that on my router (10.0.0.2)?

Go to start, run, type "cmd" and press enter.

In the black window, type "ipconfig /all" and press enter.

Assuming you are connected via cable to your modem, look under "Local Network Connection" for "Defualt Gateway"

Should be either 10.0.0.2 or 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1 or something like that

Type it in your browser address bar (in Internet Explorer, where you type in web addresses, e.g. http://10.0.0.2) and you will be presented with your router page. You can then see download (downstream) and upload(upstream) sync speed.

Downstream - Upstream

SNR Margin: 11.5 - 12.0 db
Line Attenuation: 39.0 - 22.5 db
Data Rate: 4096 - 512 kbps

How do i change my IP? its DHCP

DHCP is fine..

WHen i said edit out your IP for security reasons, i meant edit it out of your post (post #4 above) so that readers of the forum (and potential hackers) cannot see your IP address as it exposes you to vulnerabilities.

Just click the "edit" button under that post and edit out the IP (41.x.x.x.x)

Good stuff, you are syncing at 4mb and 512kb upload (that is the maximum attainable)

Attenuation isn't bad (better than my 57db lol)

So you should get full speed. Just download one of those file managers I mentioned above and try it out.

You won't believe it until you try it ;)

Really doesnt make a difference whether he edit out his ip or not.

If someone really wanted to they could just do port scans for potential weak computers on the net. Much faster and easier than searching for ips on the forums, which by the time you get it could be outdated or changed since its a dynamic ip.

It doesn't change the fact that it's a stupid thing to do and shouldn't be encouraged..

Just trying to protect a fellow forumite here as his IP would still more than likely still be current at the time of this posting..

I think it could make a difference though? Someone with the right knowledge may be able to do something with it, so it's just for protection

i have kept the same IP for weeks on end. even rebooting the router (and switching it off for 5 minutes) would still see me login with the same IP.

but your point is fair enough about forums being the place to pick IP addresses to hack. Especially in a dynamic IP environment.
