Starlink-powered off-grid data centres coming to South African mines

JSE-listed South African technology company 4Sight Holdings has partnered with US edge connectivity provider Armada to roll out edge data centres at remote mining sites in Africa.

Armada is a San Francisco-headquartered venture that has received tens of millions of dollars in funding from significant investors, including Microsoft and Founder's Fund, an early SpaceX investor.

Great tech, but why would anyone invest in mining here when we have a regulatory environment that is actively stifling it? And I don't share the optimism that starlink will be allowed either.

I wonder why a mine would need that level of local computing power.

I know they need things like CCTV system, underground telecoms, access control, system monitoring etc. Does that really require a full container worth of compute? Sound like something you can do it a single 4U or 6U chassis. The whole point of the Starlink connection is you can upload any bulk processing of data to datacentres..

Sounds like the company made the product for its "it has to be AI" shareholders and customer shareholders and not something that would be adopted in the real world.
