The RAM I ordered at wootware just arrived.... one problem - it was 4x 2GB instead of 2x 4GB!

I ordered G.Skill F3-12800CL7Q-8GBXM 2x4GB DDR-1600 Ripjaws X

The lantencies on the ones I ordered were

7-8-7-24-2N

whereas the latencies on the others are

9-9-9-24-2N

Advice is appreciated, I'm not sure what to do now. Thanks

the latency & number of chips.....

It's not what you ordered tell 'em to take it back. If you later want to add another 8GB then you'll have to buy 4....

Luckily they phoned and asked me before they actually sent it... do you think I should change it to 2x 4GB 1600MHz with 9-9-9-24-2N timings? The timings are worse but it is fewer chips..

I cannot find anything like that on their site. The only GBXM g.skill memory they have is a set of 4 x 2gb.

The only problem having 4 instead of two, is that you cannot upgrade. But then, are you going to be using the same memory interface by the time you want to upgrade from 8gb?

On the memory timing issue, are you sure that is the memory spec and not what your motherboard decided to clock them at?

I would take 2 x 4GB. Those timings are about the same as most 4GB sticks of DDR3.

Oh gawsh. I meant the RAM just arrived at the supplier, wootware. They noticed it wasn't exactly what I ordered, so phoned to confirm (rather switched on I must say)

yes, there was a mix-up on their side. in the product listing it said 2x4GB, in the product details, it says 4x2GB. That's where they spotted the error.

And yes, I may want to upgrade. It is possible. I do run tons of applications, VM's, etc.

no clue about the memory spec. It's what they've got listed on their site.

If you are running SB, then it doesn't really matter if you are running 2 or 4 sticks, but since you want to upgrade, go for the 2 sticks...

Ok thanks for the replies everybody, I think I will ask them for the 2x4GB, with higher latencies.

They are R245 cheaper though.

Srsly, I don't see how anyone needs more than 8GB of ram, and by the time you upgrade you'll probably need ddr4/5 or sumthin..

I have sooo many things open and then I still open up a game and play it and minimise it and then go back in etc. all a breeze with 4GB..

I got the G Skill 2 x 4GB 1333 from Wootware and it's absolutely awesome, so far my max usage has been less than 70% and that's with a ton of development software and design programs running. I'll be getting another set just for the heck of it, cant see my usage going over 40% then :D

From what i've heard, more RAM is better than less and when it comes to speed (especially with gaming) you won't see a massive difference with faster RAM

latencies should only bother you if you are trying to earn a ranking on hwbot

4 virtual machines, fixed at 1.5GB each: 6GB
Ram drive: 2GB
main system: 1.5GB
total: 9.5GB

That leaves you 6.5 GB to play around with, if you have 16GB. Hope that answers your question..

Ah I see, not being funny but what exactly do you do with that? :) Just interested..

Eg. I've got about 12 Firefox windows open, tinker around on the hdd, media player going simultaneously, multiple torrents on the go, and as I said before I can open up any game and everything's silky smoove..
