Bought an Isuzu KB250 D-TEQ 4x2 last year to cope with the growing family, first bakkie I've ever owned. It's only a 4x2, but how far off-road can I venture with the bakkie or is it only good for gravel roads? I have almost zero off-road experience.

I would say pretty far as a 4X2 has the all important ground clearance + rear diff lock for when the conditions get really tough.

I would not tackle the Sani Pass in a 4X2 though.

With no experience stick to gravel roads. With experience, further than you would get in a 4x4 now.

If you are interested in going offroad, try and do off road driver training, specifically with a 4x2. I assume yours has a rear diff lock?

A 4x2 can handle sand reasonably well. In most cases you will just need more momentum than a 4x4 and this is where you can damage your vehicle. Other terrain is also doable, but you will struggle most with low traction surfaces (mud and sand) and very uneven surfaces where your suspension cannot move far enough to keep all wheels on the ground. Worst case is an axle twister, and the only way you will get through is momentum, and even then you still probably won't get through.

Try and find a drivers course, they will teach you a lot.

Do you know of a place in the Western Cape where one can go for a course? I can only find 4x4 training.

Thank you. Do you know of any 4x2 drivers courses in the Western Cape?

Sorry, no. But ask the 4x4 places, they should be able to teach you everything you need to know about a 4x2 as well. Each 4x4 works a little bit differently anyway so they should be able to tailor the course to your requirements.

Took a friend with a 4x2 Amarok to Welgelegen a couple of months back. He had to skip all the obstacles and in one steep incline he had to be pulled out by 2 4x4's.

I would they they are great for camping, gravel and long distance driving/overlanding. 4x4 kind of stuff, NO. (unless you have friends to help you).
