5.1 Surround for Bedroom

Hi Gents

Just need some advice.

Looking for a decent cheapish setup 5.1 surround sound. I'm looking to connect it to my tv via optical or hdmi. I also want to mount the speakers in the corners of the ceiling.

Most of the surround sound 5.1 systems comes with a dvd which connects to the tv via rca cables. Will i still be able to get surround sound if i play my AT2 which is connected to via hdmi and then connects to the dvd via rca. Will i loose surround sound?

Sorry for the silly question.

Any suggestions i would welcome :o

Ok, thanks R13. must i get a dvd 5.1 surround that has coaxial digital/optical/hdmi IN or OUT on the dvd and coaxial digital/optical/hdmi on the tv IN to get 5.1 surround sound.
 
The best way is to make that DVD box thing take all the input. If it can take HDMI or optic/coax then connect your AT2 directly to it and output video only to the TV. I'm not sure what I suggest may actually require a proper receiver.

You need an AV receiver which has optical/coaxial digital IN, then hook up your ATV via an optical cable to the receiver & connect HDMI to tv for video. Alt if your Tv supports optical out then you can just connect the ATV to the TV set via HDMI (route both audio&video via the HDMI) then use your TV's optical out into the AV receiver. That way you'll get your 5.1 .RCA is stereo only
 
Why don't you get a soundbar? Good for bedroom with almost zero cable laying?
 
Lots of misinformation here sadly....

RCA is a plug standard. It can be used for as many channels as you want. To say that it's stereo only is bollocks.

However it's likely that cheaper systems only have 2 plugs which means stereo only. Also if you plug anything into a TV via HDMI and then output the sound again it will be stereo only, even if you use optical. This is a restriction of the HDMI standard, some crap about content protection.

Buy a cheap home theater in a box system that has optical in, even better if you can get HDMI in. Plug the ATV into the home theater player/receiver (if it has HDMI in, use HDMI cable, otherwise optical for the sound and HDMI from the ATV to the TV). Then connect the TV's Optical Out with the player/receiver's other Optical In.

So you need something with at least 1 Optical In an 1 HDMI IN, or 2 Optical In ports.

was about to ask this - have seen soundbar advertisements , and claims that it gives good "surround".

i dont think it feasible to setup 5 / 7 speakers in a bedroom (will just not be a bedroom anymore)


anybody knows how the performance of a good quality soundbar is?

Do you mean hdmi or optical in on dvd player

Yes you can get get HD on RCA but I doubt the OP's sound in a box thing comes with those connectors. He's definitely talking bog standard red and white stereo.
