Hi Guys

i need help figuring out my surround setup.

I have an LCD with 1 HDMI port,XBOX with 1 HDMI port and want to buy the Sony DAV-DZ290K which includes 1 HDMI out.

Ideally i would like my XBOX sound through the Sony but also need the HDMI port to display DVD's to my LCD.Does this mean that the DVD unit needs to have 2 HDMI ports ,IN for the XBOX and OUT for the LCD?

:wtf:

You need an amp/receiver that will take either an HDMI in for sound/video or one that at least has an optical in for audio, that unit will not do what you need it to do cause it is only designed to be 5.1 for that unit.

But the XBox doesnt have optical out does it? Does your TV?

So if the Sony has an optical in then i can connect the XBOX to it via optical to get 5.1 sound?

Yes, but if you use the HDMI cable for video then you'll either need to buy the official MS HDMI cable with an optical out or do a DIY with an existing cable with an optical out

But the XBox doesnt have optical out does it? Does your TV?
Not the box itself, but VGA & Component cables have an optical out in them, as does the MS HDMI cable

How much does an optical cable cost?

I'm using a regular HDMI cable to connect my Xbox to my TV, and then a 2 to 2 RCA to connect the TV to my sound system. Sound system has stereo and optical input.

I can use the XBox VGA cable, but it looks bad on my TV. Theres a black bar at the bottom and the resolution is incorrect somehow. That has optical out. I could buy the XBox HDMI, not sure if its worth it.

Dont use the VGA cable but the other cables attached(Component) .Then you need to adjust your XBOX to upscale your video quality. Not sure how much the optical cable is but its cheaper than HDMI (I think)

HDcabling.co.za can sort you out with the optical cable as well as an adaptor that lets you use HDMI and optical out on the Xbox at the same time, and way cheaper than the official XBox HDMI cable.

VGA is better quality than component, as far as I know. Thats why I wanted to use it. HDMI is the best I think. Pity you cant get a splitter, to split HDMI into HDMI + optical audio. I'd do that. I suppose I need the R500 XBox official HDMI cable for that.

Depends on the TV, on mine the component is far better then VGA, not only cause for some unknown reason VGA is limited to 1680x1050 while the component can go all the way to 1080p, HDMI and component on some levels can look very similar as well.

Component is by far the worst. I tested on 2 TV's. Overly bright, unnatural colors, lots of ghosting, pixelated gfx. Nasty.

It looks decent when you sit very far though. VGA appears like a PC game, seems more anti-aliased.

BTW Lupus my VGA can go to 1920x1080, that's what the dashboard shows.

Nope my TV itself only has a VGA resolution of 1680x1050, also as I said it is entirely TV dependent, I've seen ones where HDMI looks washed out but VGA looked fine etc... I've got no problems with component on my TV as well and it goes all the way to 1080p and is as good as HDMI

Ok..so let me wrap this up...XBOX to Sony via optical and then Sony to LCD via HDMI.Will this work?

As you've phrased this, I don't think so. To get the optical sound to be played by the Sony, the Sony will have to be switched to the optical channel. To get the picture sent from the Sony to the LCD, the Sony will have to be switched to the HDMI channel. Unless the Sony supports simultaneous inputs (which I doubt) you cannot do this as you've stated above.

Here is my setup that I use with a PC, Xbox 360 Elite (with HDMI), and PS3.

The TV is a Sony KDL32EX400 with multiple HDMI inputs, but I run the consoles and PC into a Sony STR-DH510 AV receiver that has 3 x HDMI inputs (http://www.sony.co.za/product/str-dh510). The receiver has 1 HDMI output that goes to the TV. PC Sound is input to the receiver via optical cable.

Speakers are from a Logitech Z5300 system. The reason for buying the Sony stuff is the Bravia sync feature. Hitting the PS button on the PS3 controller for example will power up the PS3, the AV receiver, the TV and select the correct input on the receiver. The remote on the receiver can control the TV as well.
