5.1 Surround Sound

I am having a problem with 5.1 Surround Sound. I run Windows XP Home Edition. I set the sound to 5.1 surround, but the system keeps on changing it back to "desktop". How do I bypass this problem?

Do u have any other software running for your sound card? (Sigmatel Audio Studio, Realtek's App,...)

Try Configuring it in the 3rd party software that came with the sound card (or motherboard). That usually override the Windows Settings.

That's what I do and it works fine. For some reason Windows also reset my speakers to Stereo.

I have soundmax loaded. I uninstalled it, then the sound didn't work and I couldn't find the CD with the program on it. So I used a restorepoint in WIN XP and it worked for a couple of days.

Soundmax is back, but just like before when I try to launch it, it doesn't work. And this morning when I put the PC on I have no sound <again>, but soundmax is there.

What is a good program I can use instead of soundmax (ps. it's a onboard soundcard still with the old gameport and is quite old with CD AWOL, So I don't even know what kind of soundcard it is.)

Onboard soundcard is not good.

My suggestion is to disable it and ( ) purchase a proper soundcard, as onboard soundcards tend to suck up a lot of CPU processing power...

but I might be wrong as they might put newer chips on which don't tax the CPU at all...
