When are we going to really see fast broadband. I'm currently in Canada and here I'm using 5 Mbps DSL - is it not high time we get this sort of performance at home ? Downloading 180Mb in 7 minutes is far more acceptable than waiting an hour plus as is the case with 512kbps. [8D]

Never. Or... by the time we get 5Mbit broadband everybody else will be on 1Gbit dsl or some crap like that and 5Mbit will be considered too damn slow to do much.

Telkom se ma...

According to Telkom, the distance between South Africa and the rest of the world is the reason why the cost of bandwidth has been so high for 10 years. So basically, Telkom are saying that we will always be 4 times more expensive than our European and American internet users, because we will always be the same distance from them that we are now.
Mr Wally Beelders, are you reading this old man? I suppose this is what you will say as long as you are employed by Telkom and the fat profits they make from bandwidth fill your bank account every month.

Australia is in the middle of the pacific ocean.
Africa is 10 km away from Europe.

You do the math.

Where do you get 5 Mb DSL? I thought the fastest was 4 Mb.

If you can, get Cogeco Cable. 10 Mb/1 Mb. DSL suck.

My buddy in sweden has a 10mb dsl connection & pays roughly R600 bucks a month for it. The other also on sweden has a 1mb connection for just under R300!!!!!!!!

Pity about the ****e weather, although Finland does have the advantage of having the most sexually aggressive women in the world apparently, I know which I'd pick :P

Luckily, I don't spend 70% of my income on education, healthcare, and internet.

Yes the tax is hi there but even if it wasnt that hi telcomunications there wouldnt be much diffrent , we just have telkom being the main problem telkom is killing themselfs slowely they are gona loose so much money to the othere company , if they dont do something now . so many peaple would change to the othere company out of pure princple like pay back time i dont think they realise the hate for they *** service and they lack of developement . i asked them to repalce a line leading from one box to anothere inside my complex , becouse its foulty , i was told to go away and that its not worth it for them . thats in real basic terms . with that kind of attitude they are not gona get anywhere.

A-
Do we really not pay 70% to our efficient governmint ?
I pay 35% on my salary, 14% VAT on almost everything else, at least 40% on import charges, and petrol - well - it must be like at least 35% there too.
So - depending on what u're getting/buying, youre probablee close to giving gov 70% as well, + VAT.
And - we'ere paying for other people's elec and water and management and policing and transport.

B-
(teklom's Distance Argument)Aren't the plates that the continents sit on moving further apart, about 3mm per year ? If so, then we're just going to keep on having to pay more and more, and teklom can now use the increased 3mm as an excuse to increase their excessive profit.

LOL

Also known as Socialism. The unfortunate part is that you aren't getting value for money (a lot of people are of course).
Why? Look at this analogy.

Potholes begin to develop in a road. At first, they are few and small and are left alone. As time goes by, the potholes become bigger and bigger and more numerous, until they pose a threat to motor vehicle safety. The only problem now is that there are so many potholes and of such a size, that it is a better proposition to retar the whole road rather than fill and retar the numerous potholes. Obviously there are implications to closing a road for a couple of days while it is retarred.

So what does this mean? There are many deep holes at the moment - probably will be for a while. Only patches are being applied from time to time. The big fix mentality might be there, but the problem is that closing the road will never be an option... [8]
