5 ways hijackers target you

1. Vehicles hijacked at fuel stations

Drivers of vehicles are approached by assailants at fuel stations while filling up with fuel. They approach the driver from his or her blind-spot and force the driver out of the vehicle.

I always get out of my vehicle and stand outside looking around at what is going on.

2. Stranger danger

Vehicle owners are approached at social spots by strangers who try to befriend them and later spike their drinks, take their keys and make off with their vehicle.

I'm not very social-able in such places except with established friends, so I'm fine.

3. Blue light robberies

Vehicle owners are pulled over by imposters posing as traffic or police officials – often in unmarked vehicles. Once they pull over, they are overpowered and their vehicles taken.

Doubt they will go to that effort for a Figo with a marked car, if unmarked car, I think will slowly drive to nearest police station

4. Vehicles taken in house robberies

Vehicle owners are overpowered in their homes and vehicles are taken along with other possessions.

Good luck with that.

5. Vehicles hijacked after driver is followed home

Assailants follow vehicles home, after which owners are boxed in and hijacked in their driveway. Assailants often wait for the owner to enter the property and then block the security gate from closing behind them.

I put my green neighbourhood watch/CPF light on roof when I enter my hood (so they'd have to pretty ballsy to continue following me), often doing a quick patrol, I do look for a strange car (there are known ones which I do recognize) turning into my street behind me, then I am much more cautious and give my house a skip and drive round the block.

1. Vehicles hijacked at fuel stations
Never fill up at night, never fill up at stations that are not busy, rather do it in the morning at the busy stations. Switch off the car, take your keys, get out, maybe walk into the store and watch the surrounding, or even pay for the petrol in there.

2. Stranger danger
I guess with this, one has to remain as aware as possible. Don't let your guard down if you're out with a few people or alone.

3. Blue light robberies
I've experienced this before, luckily for me it was legit cops in an unmarked vehicle. They were driving so close behind me, I sped up and they thought I was running from them so they chased me screaming for me to stop, I scream back I will stop at the police station which was literally down the road and the driver guy pulled out his gun pointed it at me saying if I don't stop he will shoot. I had my 2 year old sister in the back. She still remembers that day.

Just be aware of your surroundings. I would like to think robbers will stay a few meters away to distract you and attack when no one is looking or paying attention.
I drive a fairly quick car so if I feel paranoid, I floor it, skipping my residence in hopes of losing whoever I think is following me.

Nah, many SA crims are way more open about attacking in broad daylight these days

The driveway thing is worrying, not arriving home but leaving.

How do you protect yourself when reversing into the road? No space to turn around and drive out front first :(

We have a 30m long, narrow driveway with a rickety old carport at the end and I'm not good at reversing :D :D.
Then how do you get your car out again? It has to be reversed at some point unless there is space to turn around inside.

bwahahahaha you got me there :crylaugh: :crylaugh: :crylaugh:

I reverse out by aiming for the gate - there are bushes up there so by going crooked I hit a bush and not another car.
