I've just heard from Hellkom that to open a new line in a new house with them will take 5 weeks and will cost R500 :eek:

That can't be right. Even by Hellkom's standards or lack there of :(

Why the installation fee?
Why not go with a Closer deal and get free installation?

And as for standards.
I think you've dropped the ball. We all know they don't have any

The 5 weeks could be explained by their outsourcing contracts and the fact that an exchange needs to be prepped for another line... some exchanges are full.... but overall Telkom is still slow....

I don't get it why you have to wait that long. My line was installed within 4 days. I phoned them on Wednesday and Saturday the guy came and installed the line. Had to pay the R500.00 installation fee, but got the line and happy surfing from then on...

What a shame that waiting 4 days for installation is considered good

How much are long distance calls with standard Hellkom tariffs?

I won't say 5 weeks is bad, being realistic, if they have a large backlog, it might be real.

My friend had to transfer to Ermelo, he ordered a dsl line, and waited 12 weeks, phoned, waited, phoned and waited. 8 months later they gave the go ahead and made an appointment to install it for him.

Upon arrival they told him that they cannot install it, as his street is not on the telkom database. New street and area, and he will have to wait. It took forever, so he eventually just got 3G... lovely.

So count yourself lucky.

On the upside, my order was scheduled for 4 weeks waiting time, but they phoned and rocked up in 5 days :)
