Slightlightly off topic,
would the cheapest 500GB external HDD be a 500GB internal drive combined with a enclosure. I don't know the combined prices - so I might be wrong.
If you go the eSATA route it would also be faster and more flexible for future upgrades.
Gary, what would be the price of such a setup? What would you recommend? Feel free to start a new thread about this.
Had a look at various options. Finally decided on the Nexstar 3 eSATA enclosure and got a 500GB SATA drive (Seagate). Price for Nexstar was about R350 and the HDD was about R900. Got a eSATA card for the desktop at about R250 and a PCMCIA adapter for the laptop at about R200. The Nexstar also do the USB thing so is still compatible with all other systems. In eSATA mode the data transfer speed is phenomenal. Almost 10x faster than USB. And this was 2 months ago - hdd prices have dropped a bit.
