Can someone tell me what kind of speed I need to get on a 512k connection. I am asking this because yesterday I when phoning the call centremy exchange only support up to 384k yet I think I am getting 512 because my d/l's is getting about 50kbps

Sounds like 512 to me. You'll never get that on a 384 line, the max sustainable rate I achieve (and even on local connections) is around 40KBps give or take maybe 1 KBps :)

512K might give u around 52kb per sec
384K gives speed of 35-40kb per sec

Well,

512/8 = 64KB/s

and

384/8 = 48 KB/s...

If you're getting 50KB/s, that's more than the claimed maximum for 384kbps.

I have a 512 line and o the news servers (cached) and ftp downloads (Saix Gaming) I get the following speed of 55kbps D/L... this is constant and doesn't drop at all... I have netlimiter running 24/7 and per hour I get just over 200MB...

55kBps LOL

LOL... On a serious note, i have to say that the 512 is lakker compared to the 384 but I will be downgrading at the end of the month so i can take advantage of the new tarriffs. If it was a bit cheaper I would love to keep it.

Well there is the upload speed going from 128kb -> 256kb, that should make a nice difference is sending emails, webcams or any uploading.

When you're as low as 384kb any speed increase would make a difference seeing as loading pages would actually be a problem. The difference from eg. 1mb to 4mb might not be as big for browsing.

really

Is there a big difference?

Yeah there def is. On 384 i got approx 4gb p/d @ 40KBps. On 512 is get approx 5.5gb p/d @ 55KBps. That 1.5 makes a big difference.

As for uploads on the 384 it was running at around 15KBps but on 512 it is on 30KBps constant.
