Hi there
I'm running on 384 wirh my adsl. Is it wise and do I gain by upgrading to 512 line by telkom?
Thanx

what speeds are you getting ATM?

Cos ppl 384 often get 512 speeds, but i havent heard of anyone getting higher than normal speeds on 512.

no - you will not gain anything, except the extra amount on your Telkom bill.

Thats not true if he is getting 40kb/s on dsl384 he would get about 56kb/s on dsl512. I use to get 50kb/s on dsl384 so if you are getting close to that on your current connection it is not worth forking out the extra cash.

It is faster, but it is also a LOT more expensive, and you will never get the "bursting" effect 384 users get.
LINE RENTAL CHARGES [source=http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/products/dsl/home_how_much.html]:
R 477.00 = 512
R 359.00 = 384 [add 118 to upgrade]
R 270.00 = 192 [add 89 to upgrade]

R118 more a month for 128 more in bandwidth.
And - you cannot test it and then go back to 384 without paying "Downgrade Fee's".
You decide.

If you're thinking of upgrading, go strait for 1MB... that's R680.00 per month.

its probably not worth it, 384 is the most "overperforming" package! 512 is almost silly to get!

if its speed you're after, then by all means upgrade, but its most unwise to make telkom richer wile they're still ripping us off... stick in the slow lane - 192 is fast enough.

I agree with most of the posters. Even the latest broadband report statesd that 512 wasn't worth the buck, comparitively speaking. You can check out http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=23420 to see what most users are actually getting (trf rates). I get 420kb/s on my 384 line, so maybe check your setting before doing the upgrade. I used TCPOptimiser to tweak mine (google it).
