I'm thinking of buying one.

Any hick-ups with these models? I saw one for R 79k which just seems too good to be true. (Cash obviously) Just don't want to buy it if it's shyte.

Probably one of the best diesel engines produced by BMW IMHO. As long as it has been maintained properly with fresh oil and filters and the revs did not wear the turbo to much you should be ok. Oh, the diesel fuel pump is an expensive item to replace, make sure it pumps fine when you go test the turbo boost pressure...

If it was property maintained you shouldn't have any problems. At that price I presume it has 150 000 - 200 000km on the clock?

Be sure to do a proper background check on services. You dont want to buy a problematic car, or one that has been in accidents.

The only expensive part to replace is the turbo and maybe injectors. Other than that its rock solid.

That's pretty inexpensive parts.

Thanks Ponder.

From that list the swirl flaps are probably the most concerning. If they come apart and get sucked into the engine you could be looking at a hefty bill. As far as I know there are upgrades or people remove them and block them off. plenty of info and vids on the net.
Other issue is that filter located in the crank case getting blocked (neglected maintenance) and starving the turbos of oil.

The above you can do yourself, the rest are minor things you can also do yourself.

That is quite funny.

Fixing a diesel BMW out of warranty can be a bank breaking affair. I have owned a few of them.

I do recommend getting it checked out by an expert, not the appy at the BMW workshop. Unfortunately true diesel experts are really few and far between. Get the history from BMW.

Nice power for a diesel. Unfortunately people want to drive them like a PETROL turbo engine. And this is what causes the issues. Power is addictive and every owner pushes them.

I will bet he got a lower trade in value from a used car dealer. So you most likely can negotiate a bit.
