Cape Town - A total of 548 former police officers have returned to SAPS ranks following a re-enlistment drive launched earlier this year, police said on Thursday.

National spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said in a statement that in an effort to bolster service delivery, an effort to fill more than 1 000 vacant posts had been launched.

A total of 3 152 applications were received from former officers.

"While we had 1 105 posts that needed to be filled, it must be noted that the focus of this exercise was on quality and not quantity," he said.

"Therefore, from the 3 152 applications received, only 548 members have been provisionally approved for re-enlistment. Of this number, 309 will be deployed to the visible policing environment, 192 to detectives, and 47 to the support environment."

Only members with no criminal records, no pending criminal cases against them, and with a commendable track record of good performance had been recruited, Naidoo said.

"In addition to the re-enlistment process, the SAPS will be embarking on the recruitment of 4 500 new recruits to be enlisted by March 2016," he said.

Some of the re-enlisted officers had already started with their duties, while others were expected to return by February 2016.

I should hope so and what about matric.
This is still to be tested?
