I can't find anything in the Music Xpress thread so I'll try a new thread.

Does anyone know of a free pdf reader that works offline, or a free office suite/ program that can read .doc files?

I'm afraid the only legal way is to pay for them.
But the phone can read doc files by default. Although I have two doc files on my phone and only one works so I don't think you can count on it.

Haven't tried .doc files yet - docx didn't work so assumed it couldn't read the former natively.

That forum requires registration to download.
