5D mkII price drop

Sweet! I've been wanting to get one too, but I'm holding off on any purchases for now. If Nikon updates the D700 with the D3S sensor, It will be hard to resist switching :o

It's a leapfrog - nikon - canon - nikon - canon . . . so it's pretty easy for me to resist.

I told a friend I'd take some photos tomorrow night for his kid's b'day party so I'll see how I like it after an evening with it.

Until then though - I'm gonna have me some fun :)

Except, Canon appears to be playing catch-up rather than leapfrogging, at least as far as low light/high ISO goes in their mid- to high-end bodies. And that's my primary interest. Looking at the samples of the D3S and 1DmkIV, and the difference is much bigger than I expected. Unfortunately it's only JPEGs - I'd love to play with those RAW files. But even so, at 10200 ISO, the D3S looks better than my 50D looks even at 3200 :eek:

Anyway, there are more things that are beginning to grate me. The TC-80N3 remote that cost me and arm and a leg is built into the D700. And Auto-ISO. Every DSLR should allow you the ability to set your ISO limits and minimum shutter speed. Why on earth Canon hasn't caught on to this yet is beyond me. It's such a basic thing, and it's all in the software. Nothing is stopping them from releasing a firmware update that provides this.

That is one big-ass lens! Without a tripod I would probably only be able to get shots of my feet with something that size. :o

You're surprised a newer pro camera has that much better ISO than a older amateur one? In a year or two when I get the 1DMk4 I'm not going to be too surprised when I discover it produces better images than my Mk3. :)

Ok so it is surprising that they dont offer that even though my much older 1D does but when you bought the 50D you didnt really expect them to add it later did you? Was there a rumour that they would?

I guess if you're going to switch you might as well do it now before you start investing in glass.

Yeah and not a cheap one too but since its one of the lenses I'm considering buying I figured its worth it

It's got some heft to it. ;) But you raise a good point . . . where is that monopod of mine :confused:

No I was just putting it into perspective to show why I want something like that. 102000 is the very highest setting, which I would expect is more a marketing gimmick than something that's actually usable (like 12800 on the 50D). But it's surprisingly good. To my eyes, the D700 still does a better job at high ISO than the 1DmkIV, but then there is a difference in their sensor sizes, so I'll wait for the 1DSmkIV to show up before passing judgement.

No, I'm not being unrealistic - they've never added a feature with a firmware update (except for the video FPS thing, but most video folks consider that fixing something that was broken). But they can, and I think they should, given that their direct competition offers it.

I'm holding out to see if Canon does come out with something like the rumoured 3D, and if so, what it offers. Glass is the one reason I'm reluctant. No 24-105mm f/4 VR, the 24-70 is even bigger than the Canon one, no compact and affordable 70-200mm f/4 VR.
 
I guess higher ISO is the new megapixel race. Important to some I'm sure but I'd rather see them working on dynamic range.

I should expand on that. Higher MP won't help me get a shot that I couldn't get with a lower MP camera (unless it relies on "digital zoom" in post).

Good clean high ISO, on the other hand, is pretty useful to me. Right now, I'm willing to use 6400 ISO if there's no other way, but knowing that I'm going to have to spend substantial PP time. The stuff I post on Flickr is really only my travel pics, which account for maybe 10% of the time I spend shooting. The rest is friends, family, co-workers etc, more often than not in situations where three or four extra stops of sensitivity, producing clean usable images, would be worth an extra £1000. I don't make money with my images - time spent doing PP is time wasted for me.

Well after a weekend I've got to say the 300mm is a nice lens - really nice - but just a bit too short even with the 1.4x TC.

So the 400mm it is then? Do you need f/2.8? Because if not, the 500mm f/4 in the same price range.

The faster the better and it gives me the option of using a 1.4 TC and still having f/4.

At least I get to keep the speedlite even if I do have to return the lens in the morning. :)

To answer my earlier question - and in case anyone ever wonders - the Sigma does pretty well when used as a wireless slave to the speedlite. Next time the opportunity presents itself I'll plant the sigma up upon high and (it's already half covered with velcro anyway . . . ) and make the most of it until the batteries run out.
