Why is 5G going to take so long in SA when many American cities already have 5G which was launched last year? AT&T flipped the switch on 5G wireless service in 12 cities — Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Raleigh, San Antonio and Waco last year in 2018.

Who said it's going to take so long?

Vodacom, MTN and Rain are all testing their 5G networks.

Anyway, what difference is it going to make to you?

At least south africa had 3g before USas

5G is one thousand times faster with zero latancy that's what the big difference is. It will change your life forever. US signed spectrum agreements for 5G in 2017 SA will not sign until late 2020. Who is delaying 5G in SA?

I don't know where you get your info. Rain is already rolling out 5G and there's no such thing as 5G spectrum. Also nice little quib there

It is all about spectrum delaying 5G in SA! Lesotho already signed 5G spectrum years ago. Who is delaying SA 5G Spectrum Sale?
Industry will use 5G a million times more than cell phone networks. https://www.htxt.co.za/2018/09/06/why-lesotho-has-5g-but-south-africa-doesnt/
Networks don't want to discontinue older technologies. A lot of other countries have already switched off 2G and is using the spectrum for 4G and 5G. And there's no such thing as 5G spectrum. It's not something with a tag telling you for use with 3G or 5G only, LOL.

Telkom will be switching off 2G if not later this year then next year. Cell C 2G is already non-existent here from them refarming the spectrum for 3G and 4G.

Op probably going to be moaning a lot quicker about missing data if he/she finally gets 5g

There is no benefit for 5G. It will cost more, use your battery quicker, mean larger phones (more antennas in the same phone), more heat, more cells ito radiation, etc.

There are the usual circle jerk ideas about VR/AR on 5G network! or Big data/AI/Machine Learning/IoT/<insert cliche IT term here that doesn't mean much>. The reality is that LTE/LTE-A is really sufficient for our needs. We just need cheaper data and better coverage, something that 5G won't bring about as 5G is about deploying more cells/towers and equipment. Do you think the operators are just going to absorb that capital cost?

AT&T rolls out mobile 5G service in 12 US cities- requires Netgear hotspot (Dec 2018); Verizon - Disney and The New York Times are using high-speed 5G technologies; Sprint /Nokia/Qualcomm completed the world's first over-the-air 5G data transmission using 2.5 GHz on its commercial network (Jan 2019); T-Mobile / Ericsson / Intel - world's first 5G data call and video call on 600 MHz on a live commercial network. (Jan 2019). Yes, it will take several years to have 5G coverage everywhere but you can already use 5G in most major cities around the world.
Regulators must make available 80-100 MHz of contiguous spectrum per operator in prime 5G mid-bands (e.g. 3.5 GHz) and around 1 GHz per operator in millimetre wave bands (i.e. above 24 GHz).
If South Africa wants to take a lead on 5G rollouts regulators should make the spectrum available to all operators as soon as possible.
The benefits mmWave 5G helps realise over a 15-year period, from 2020 to 2034. By the end of this period, $565 billion in global GDP and $152 billion in tax revenue will come from mmWave 5G services.

Can we try be less Murican. We have enough crime don't need more school shootings.
