Ok, so they're more like trees... I'd like to setup a connection between myself and a buddy who is on a WUG 330m straight down the road. He has a pole on his roof reaching to about 6m I think. I have a double story reaching about 6m in height, but can't put a pole up (estate rules). Unfortunately, a few trees are blocking my LOS. I suspect about 5 trees. He put up a 120 degrees 5.8ghz sector and brought me a 5.8GHz SXT to check the signal with. Signal was terrible -90db at best. A buddy of his who lives another 300m further down the road has a 2.4GHz sector pointing my way, so we tried picking that up with a 2.4 grid and some mikrotik hardware but at best we could get about -85dB.

Is there something I could try? Was thinking that maybe two Nanobridge M2's might be able to push through the trees?
 
Forget it. Trees are signal killers. And wait till it rains and the branches/leaves get wet.

Just this weekend we tested a 2.4 GHz omni. There was one smallish branch of an oak tree about 1 meter away from the omni. Moving the omni to beyond the branch made a 5 dB difference in SNR for a friend higher up the road.
 
a 120 degree sector only runs at 15dbi
rather put a 2.4 grid at his house pointing directly at you and a 2.4 grid at your place pointing it him

which wug ?
 
Trying to join CTWUG. Also trying to contact the owners of the de grendel farm about the possibility of putting up a high-site on the hill next to burgundy estate.
 
What limits the effective use of the 2.4 Band here in RSA is the limited power output (100mwatts) allowance for any real use. Telkom are cranking down on illegal users overstepping the 2.4 EIRP limits set out.

How cellular signals 1800-2200 can penetrate foliage is due to their exclusive use of the channel and pretty much non existent noise floor combined with 10-20Watts plus output power allows for punching through most obstacles :D

As en example your mobile phone transmits up to 5Watts E.I.R.P :P
 
let's say you went the ubnt route, would you guys recommend the 5.8 120 degree sector or the 2.4 120 degree sector?

UBNT? 2 x Nanobridges. Sectors are for point to multipoint, not point to point.
 
Icasa limits the EIRP to 100mW on 2.4GHz and 1W 5.8GHz right? Doesn't that mean that you will be able to get a much stronger signal using 5.8GHz?
 
I spoke to the guys at Miro: they say the increased output power of the M5 should be able to go through the trees without a problem. About 4 trees along the 300m between the two points?
