Hi all,

So I got the IS 1mbit DSL over fibre package and as always I have to review everything I get my hands on.

Anyways was really amazed that it costs R5000 a month for a service that should cost around R500 a month (if not less)

For those interested, the review is here.

Yeah, pretty good reviews on your site. Def. a site I will recommend to new buyers (it takes a bit of time to filter through all the MyADSL posts to get what you want!)

Thank you for the kind comments, I am glad that it can be useful to people.

I have fixed the repeated repeated line ;)

ebendl, I try to be optimistic but fair with my reviews. Glad you enjoy them.

Ah, sometimes difficult to remain optimistic in SA when it comes to Internet provision... :)

Why the hell does IS retain ownership of the router? It's only worth about R700 and you're paying R5k a month for the love of God!

IS installs a cisco 837, Cisco has already posted EOL notification on 5 July, the replacement product is the 877.

The 837 costs around R3500 at last pricing, probably 20% more now.

It's a darn good router and very reliable, I use them for all our ADSL client connections, because they don't crash and have some nice QOS facilities with some built in IPS (intrusion prevention) services built into the unit.

Okay so it's darn good...

Does that justify it being like 8 times the price of a wireless router? Not to mention about 13 times the price of a normal router.

Yeah, the router thing really bothers me as well (yes it is a good router), however normally the router becomes yours after x amount of time.

IS however has a little clause tucked away in their contract stating that they get the router back once your contract is up and it must be in perfect condition etc etc etc.

IMO, yes, if you're going to be paying 5k a month for your internet connection, you're not going to sneeze at paying for the router, although I'd now be recommending that the upgrade is to the 877 (ADSL2+ with QOS for voice), the 857 is an alternative.

myself, I've bought a 871 (100mb ethernet/metronet router [we'll get there one day]) for home and use a little billion so that I can authent through the cisco with pppoe and let the Billion explode when the lightening gives us hell in GP

I think it's crappy that IS wants to own the router, probably a way to add some additional costs. one of the companies I deal with has negotiated R1000/m for the line on condition that they keep their (high cost) 64kb leased line.

Hope Diginet crashes and burns for the piece of slow **** it is... 64k just doesn't cut it anymore these days, what with 20Mb email attachments and so on. (My work gets a lot of overseas tenders and stuff from overseas where they doesn't have dinky 64k connections like we do...)

Diginet is too little, we have a 256kb line for mail and a 128k line for a link to europe (application related) and both are permantly maxed out.
