5Mb/s line query

Hey guys

I had a 5mb/s line installed at my place week or so ago.
I have been using a Telkom WiFi thingy for the last 10 years.

So let me explain my query and try to find some insight before I take it up with the Fibre people:
With the Telkom dongle I get 1.2mb/s and higher download rates, no matter from where (site/3rd party) or what I download.
With the Fibre line i dont get more than 600kb/s.

So I did a speed test on the Fibre which gave me 4.8mb/s up and down roughly the same.
Shouldnt the DL rate then be higher than 600kb/s?

I am not familiar with Fibre so unsure if this is the standard? Or am I just used to the Telkom thingy thats alot faster?
I dont want to complain to them and then I am told thats how it is.
Can anyone advise if this is normal, to be expected?

5Mb/s is around 600kb/s, so your speed is fine

If you want 5MB/s download speed get a 50Mb line...

Also dont forget your Telkom Thingy (and i assume you mean LTE dongle ) would suffer from bad latency - probably wont notice it in downloads but in streaming or gaming you would.
 
Good old advertising. The linespeed as stated is actually in megabits/second (Mb/s) rather than megabytes/second (MB/s) as clarified by @irBosOtter.

To convert Mb to MB divide the Mb by 8 so 5/8 = 0.625 MB/s. Convert this to KB would 0.625 x 1024 = 640 KB/s.
