6 groups interested in acquiring Cell C: report

Why? Who in their right mind would want a dysfunctional network?

Telkom buying Cell C would be interesting ... but would they be able to fix the network? Telkom would get a massive network footprint instantly, but big coverage footprint does not mean the network is up to scratch. Maybe with Telkom's spectrum they can fix it?

If someone like telkom takes over Cell-C and integrates it with their network, it would be great for virtual operators like FNB and Me&You who piggyback on Cell-C

Agree. Purchase price would need to factor in major expense in replacing what is broken on their network. It cannot just be configuration. From 2 years experience, Cell C is like a 3rd world country compared to Vodacom w.r.t. voice quality and data throughput.

There are many who say they are happy on Cell C, but they are the minority...

Because a lot of the network infrastructure is already in place. It takes a while to build such a large network with a very large investment. If you bought CellC there would be no cost shocks later as you know exactly what you are getting for what price.

It would be an interesting challenge since Telkom is an operator, so may not get the Cell C spectrum if they merge Cell C in to their brand. I assume they would be allowed to get a larger allowance due to the larger subscriber numbers. Then you get the LTE bands and tech, the different network and radio equipment etc.

It would be nice if Telkom could get on a decent LTE standard....

How do you mean? FD vs TD?

Out of interest, what are you thinking when you say this? Telkom has the largest allocation of LTE bandwidth to-date

I think he means their 2300mhz frequency band.

All of the above, Telkom could stick to the FDD standard and stick to frequency groups that the other providers use. Keep 2300 for fixed wireless solutions rather.

It just makes it so much more painful for customers who need to get special phones to use the Telkom network properly.
