There is already various threads on 32/64-Bit Windows, but I thought I just want more clarity.

I installed the 64-Bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate (I also have the 32-Bit version).

I have 2gb of ram, and maybe I'll upgrade in the near futur and have Intel E8200 CPU.
Some stuff don't work like games, Alcohol 120% and motherboard drivers.
I don't want to be handicapped for the rest of my life, so I want to downgrade before I'm too settled in.

Is it necessary to downgrade? And is there an easy way?

But will it make most programs work? And will there be a performance loss/gain?

Not sure. You need to research whether the programs you want to use support Windows 7. Go to each program's website and read the system requirements list. If not, then search for a program that does support Windows 7. Or if you want, post a list of the programs here and we can check for you.

The drivers you will have to check the manufacturer's website and see if there are drivers available for Windows 7. Microsoft supports a ton of hardware out of the box, but if you are having a problem with one particular piece of hardware and there is no Windows 7 driver for it, you can try and substitute a Vista driver... as they are basically built on the same architecture.

Yes, AFAIK 32bit programs are compatible with 64bit windows 7. Make sure your programs will run on 7 32bit before you downgrade...

Wel so far it was only Alcohol which gave an internal error and my Gigabyte Realtek Drivers. Although I tried Vista64 drivers it still didn't work. And the Itunes 32bit also doesn't work probably.

As I'm on a mobile connection, data is very expensive so I can't always download verified drivers and software.

Damn Telkom

OK, so instead of Alcohol you can try a program called MagicISO... which will allow you to load up your virtual disc images. For Burning ISO's back to DVD you can use IMGBurn.

post your exact motherboard model here and we can grab the drivers for you. Where do you live? maybe we can get them to you somehow?

Hi

I have windows 7 64 Ultimate and I have had no trouble with applications

I install 32Bit apps and they all work without issue

I had to download some new 64 bit drivers from my Motherboards manufacturer web site but that about it all is working fine

I have an older e6600 CPU with a Old Biostar motherboard so I don't understand how you are struggling to get Drivers for you Board if its newer than mine

If an app is giving you an issue just find the 64 Bit version of it and it will start working

What games are you having problems with

I have COD MW2 and World of Warcraft installed and they both work perfectly

Stick with 64 bit it will make you more future proof

Also please remember you need a minimum of 4Gigs memory to be able to use the 64 bit edition

Cheers

Windows 7 x64 works fine for me with 2GB memory. But 4GB will probably work even better.

I use Alcohol 120% on 7 Ultimate x64 and it works beautifully. No issues at all, no compatibility tricks, nada.

IMHO you should persevere and stick it out with W7 64bit.

In the long term it will be better.

Thank you everyone. Decided to stick wit 64B, for the day I upgrade to 4gb RAM. Got a build of Alcohol that works, and will go without the RealTek controlpanel until I have enough data to download the Win7 version. So far my Windows 7 experience: A huge improvement over XP (I skipped Vista). I simply love fast loading&startup times, the user interface and all those small stuff, like saving a click when you shut down your PC.

Ensure you're using the latest version of your problematic applications. Just go to the Alcohol website, login and download the newest version. Unless you didn't buy it of course. :p

Also, there's a 64bit version of iTunes.

I have been running 64bit since Vista and I will never go back to a 32bit OS.
