Is bigger always better, so long as the underlying technology is the same?

The one thing that worries me about 75-inch TVs is whether normal video sources will look ok: DSTV Stream, YouTube and Disney+ specifically (I know Netflix has a 4K subscription)?

I’m specifically looking at QD-Mini LEDs (TCL C6K, LG QNED 86 etc). I know that OLEDs are beautiful at R30 000, but my budget ceiling is around the R15 000 mark which is a very “middle of nowhere” place to be.

If local video sources look bad on a 75-inch screen, then maybe the cheaper 65-inch screens will be better. Any owners on here with experiences to share?

Go with 75". Your worries about how content looks on bigger screens is a non issue. The upscaling on these new TVs is very good so you shouldn't bother yourself with that. I'd go with the TCL. LG LEDs are not great, but maybe they've improved with miniLED.

Non issue in the modern world of 4K panels.

It would have been an issue in the old days when they were all 1080p.

My 85" is pretty good at scaling up decent bitrate 1080p content but SD is very noticible whereas with my 65" SD is still very good.
The 65" does feel very small now that I'm used to the bigger TV though so it would be hard to say get a 65" and not feel you would miss out.

With modern streaming in 4K (Netflix, Prime, ATV, F1TV, YT etc) you should be good even on 100 inches.

DSTV streaming though... well it's pretty unremarkable even on my 65".

Even the quality over decoder feels like it's gone down over the years as a downloaded 1080p version of an HBO show showing on Mnet is miles ahead of the satellite broadcast or catch-up version, even before looking at the 4K version.

With that being said, go 75". Looks like you could find some good options this month in that size.

Please make it make sense. Amazon is selling last year’s QNED86 for R1 000 MORE than the new 2025 “Evo” version of the very same TV:

Ok, so this conundrum resolved itself peacefully … yesterday afternoon my son showed me a video on TikTok of a retailer with a special on a 2024 65-inch LG QNED86 for R9 999 … and there was only one left … and I pulled the trigger on it. Also got a LG S65Q 3.1 soundbar for only R2500 on a Black Friday special, set it up last night, and … yes. 65 inches is a very nice upgrade from 55-inches. The colours and sharpness really are the massive step change from our old 55-inch Samsung UHD TV.

Would a 75-inch TV have been better? Undoubtedly. But I wasn’t going to find a QNED86 75-inch for R9999, and I decided that a better TV right now was better than agonising for a second longer and hoping for some killer Black Friday deal. My family actually was leaning towards one of the new TCL QD-MiniLED TVs, but even those are going for R18 000 for a 75-inch screen.

As for the soundbar: hell yes. For R2500 it is a ridiculously good deal (with Meridian sound tuning included). My 2.1 Samsung soundbar showed me the value of soundbars, and this 3.1 system just takes it to the next level.

Good luck to you if you’re in the same boat I have been for the last month, checking TV specials and endless jargon! May you find the killer deal you’re looking for.

Nice, thats a good deal. The 65's are very good all round TV's size wise. You will enjoy it.
