6710 or 5800

Hi people, I'm planning on upgrading my phone this week as my old Samsung d900 is on its final legs...

I am looking for a phone specifically with GPS and WLAN functionality and am possibly looking at the Nokia 6710 or 5800. There will be about a R1000 bigger pay in on the 5800 should i choose it over the 6710...

What would you guys recommend?
 
6710 has a faster CPU, and the 5800 has a better screen and newer OS which I suspect is for the touch screen stuff. Comes down to your usage, do you need a navigator or music?
 
if you can live with typing on a touch screen then go with the 5800 otherwise if you prefer the good ol keypad than go for the 6170

More interested in the navigation.... should be able to get Garmin XT loaded on the both of them if the Nokia Maps doesn't agree with me ;)
According to GSMARENA the 6710 also worked faultlessly....

i've never used a touch screen phone....
 
You can do a comparison on forum nokia, personally I'd go for the faster 6710 with the CPU also looks like it has a higher res camera.
 
Keep in mind symbian is not that heavy on resources, so CPU speed (as long as it is above 300mhz) will not be a problem.
 
might be a noob question.

But when the phone is connected to my WLAN at home am i correct in assuming that i can use my home internet connection instead of 3G/EDGE to browse or mxit etc?
 
Yes, it shows up as one of your access points and you can use it just like you would any other access point.

You can also use the same access point in many applications at once, so you can have Mxit open along with you browser and perhaps Google Maps all using your WLAN.

If you looking to pay in even less, have a look at the E52. It's a bar phone with 2.4 screen versus the 2.6 for the 6710, but then who looks at the screen while you're driving in any case :p It's got the same processor but the main advantage is the Li-Po 1500 battery vs the Li-Ion 950 on the 6710. It also charges through the USB port while connected to a PC.
 
Advantages of the 6710 are that it has a Carl Zeiss 5MP cam, a zoom bar (only avail in some apps), and a lifetime nav license as well as car stand and charger

On the downside the small battery and slightly larger display than e52 means that you'll need to charge more often. e52 also has doc editor and the charge by usb (not sure if 6710 can do this). If screen real estate and a music player is what you're after rather go for the 5800 (really only makes a difference if you browse on phone and watch movies and clips).

just wanted to point out that a lot of people here have the 5800 so you'll find plenty support for it here and other websites as well.

ordered my 5800 this morning, hopefully will have it by end of the week....
