Bloemfontein – Police arrested seven University of Free State (UFS) students on Monday morning after they disrupted classes.
The students were arrested for allegedly contravening a court order which was obtained by the university, said police spokesperson Captain Chaka Marope.
"They were preventing students from entering classes," he said.
The university was expected to resume its normal activities on Monday.
However, a group of student were protesting at the university's main campus, while security kept a close watch.
The protesting students were calling for the release of the arrested students. They also vowed to continue with the campus shutdown.
"The students were arrested for just gathering at the students centre and no violence was imposed on anyone. The university is calling for us to be violent," said one student leader, Jabulani Dlamini.
The university said on its website that the end-of-year examination would start one week later and therefore end one week later.
"The senior leadership of the university has taken all reasonable steps to secure the campuses and the campus community, and is monitoring the situation carefully," said UFS spokesperson Lacea Loader.
