7" vs 10.1" tablets?

Having used both 7" & 10" tablets, I can assure you that neither is suitable for reading text except for short messages & the like. Best bet for pdf documents would be an e-ink display like the Kindle Touch - much easier on the eyes imho...

Ever try reading a pdf on a kindle?
It's a nightmare.

I'd say 10" with decent ppi tablet would be a better bet.

Both are a compromise with size, portability and price some of the factors. I went to Games at Gateway and sent a complex pdf magazine over bluetooth to the 7" Galaxy Tab 7 plus. I was unable to figure out how to bluetooth a file to the Ipad though.

In the end I decided 7" works well to sit with in bed, and the PC/Laptop will serve the other extreme. I would want to get a cheap chinese 10" for viewing PDFs (and as a car media player) though, just waiting for the right specs at the right price.

Also you need to consider glare as a factor, I did put a mirror screen protector and I know that is awful in bright conditions.

I read pdf docs on ipad 2 everyday, also pdf magazines, I don't think I could ever do the same on a 7 screen, even with the iPad I have to give my eyes a rest every so often.

The only thing about the iPad2 that got on my nerves is the poor screen resolution. The 1280 9.4" screen is much sharper. However reading apps on iPad tend to be much smoother and faster than Android equivalents. That can be important on PDF's where you need to resize a lot.

I was hoping not to need to resize :(

Well it depends on the book... that's the problem with PDF's though, it's hard to get a perfect output from any reader. Kindle does the best of the lot though. At least on Kindle it optimises the text size and allows you to just thumb up and down. But I'm getting a weird thing where it resizes at random :/

Not to hijack this thread, but what app do you guys use to read pdf's? Adobe reader is fine for me, but it does not continue from the previous page where I was reading.

Aldiko also quite good...

I recently got myself a 10 inch Galaxy Tab 2 - P5100.
I first compared it to the Tab 7, but liked the extra screen real-estate for my needs ie. ebook/comic reader, couch browser, gaming rig for a 6 year old. Nice, a bit laggy on Dolhpin Browser, but Jelly Bean will probably resolve that issue.
Two days later I compared it with a friends new Google Nexus 7. If the Nexus had had a sd card slot - it would have been my first choice. If you want to travel a lot or want the processing power - take the Nexus 7. For home - the Tab 2.
As for the Chinese imports. A friend evaluated 100 models for a venture of his. Only 2 was good quality.

The Nexus seems to have similar resolution to most the 10" tabs in that price range, I'm not really to worried about space but I'm just wondering if the 7" could provide an ok reading experience.

The resolution on the Nexus 7 is the same as on most the 10" tablets that I could get in that price range, would it still be better to read on a 10" tab with the same resolution as the Nexus 7 or does the equal res make the size difference not really matter?

You ask the question that has been most nagging on my mind. 6 months later did you find an answer?

Do you guys zoom and pan on a 7" 1280x800? The lower res Ipad2/Mini falls between the 7" & 10.1" Androids. And the Kindle Fire 8.9 falls between those two, and has FHD - 1920x1200 - a resolution spec rumoured for the nex gen Nexus 7.

I know for sure that reading a full page A4 document on 1024x768 and 1280x1024 is uncomfortable. Next device need to be a FHD or better, but the question remains, 7" or 10.1" ( and throw in 8.9" for better portability/bedside use)
