Justice Minister Jeff Radebe has appointed 71 new court sheriffs, the SA Board for Sheriffs (SABFS) said on Friday.
"We fully support and congratulate the minister on taking this giant leap in the transformation of the sheriffs' profession and applaud him on his commitment at addressing the injustices of the past," it said in a statement.
The sheriffs would assume office on October 1. The SABFS said it would ensure the new sheriffs were "adequately trained, both theoretically and practically", before they assumed office.
"Sheriffs have an important role in the justice system as they act as a third party to serve court processes and to execute the warrants and orders of the court," it said.
"On behalf of the chairperson of the SABFS we wish to congratulate the new appointees and wish them our very best for a long and rewarding career."
