I'm looking at the alternative options to DTSV and like the idea of using a Raspberry Pi with XMBC to playback movies from an external HD.

Question though is, what will the quality of playback be on my HD tv.

Would it be worthwhile or would it be best to rather get a more "standard" HTPC?

Only issue I've had is with streaming HD content over the network, it doesn't really like that too much.

OK, so it sounds like a worthwhile experiment. Good.

For streaming, I'm rather looking at either the WD or the Roku.

Are you using smb/windows shares? Try using NFS, makes a big difference for me.

Yeah, and its a relatively well known issue with RaspBMC... just haven't gotten around to trying the other distro's yet.
