If that data is backed up, as usual, that double the data. If you have a paranoid administrator, like mine, with 10 backup copies that 20 times as much data. Now if the data is replicated and all the nodes / slaves also have backup.....
i prefer the terms 'duplicated' or 'redundant'.
some companies refer to the creation of backups on a server as 'replication'.
the article sounds like 25% of all data isn't backed up.
@Gatecrasher - Its not about hardware, its about the information stored. Just because you can get a 500TB drive for you database for free, doesn't mean you need store every byte you can find out there.
On a slightly different angle (bandwidth), consider how many times in your area (if you have broadband) do Internet visitors download the same files, view the same clips (that is a waste of bandwidth) , thats why the WUG are the answer as its gives less privileged users to have access to the same files without exorbitant costs in bandwidth
Ho many times do we duplicate those files onto our local drives where we can just leave it on a WUG server.
Not talking about personal data, but nothing stops us from setting up a secure server to store our personal data.
