I was in Best Buy yesterday, noticed that the 8.5 gig DVD's are
everywhere now - roughly $30 for 25..(around R210) still ridiculously
pricey but way better than the R70 or so each that I recall in SA, early last
year.
Almost bought a pack, but am gonna wait till the price drops..

The move here seems to be towards enclosure media player hard drives,
got my eye on the Mvix - a wireless network capable enclosure that you
just slap a 500 gig HD into, with all your movies on, and stream to your TV
and use a remote control to watch whatever..

Again, its all about waiting for the price to drop, as $300+ is a lot of money here.. and I'm needing to spend $550 to replace my fujitsu mobo, after a coffee accident..

Amazing how fast one gets used to both lots of easily available gadgets
and goodies, as well as reliant on a good postal system, that means I can
parcel up my laptop, send it by post to Fujitsu (who'll get it in 2-3 days)
and have it back in a week or so..

CompUSA is better I think for computer stuff. Also Fry's if it's in your area. that's the bomb. Was in Seattle for a month over xmas and Jan, the sales are crazy. personally nothing can beat newegg for online stuff. double check the prices there.

Excuse my ignorance, but is there a Best Buy outlet in SA? or where else can I get my hands on the 8.5G DVD's?

If you're in the States you should see who does genuine Taiyo Yuden media (single layer only) they beat everything else for quality and reliability. I just got a 100 "That's" TY DVD-Rs from Japan. They are da bomb :).
