8 Pin GPU connecter

Is there more than one variant of these connectors? I need a molex too 8 pin, been to marix and pc link but they don't seem to carry the right ones, I'm going to ferry around in the mall today if I cant find one I'll chop one of the cheapies.

The 8 pin does carries double power than that of the 6 pin, so that's why you don't get a molex to 8 pin. What you can do, however, is get a 2 molex to 6 pin. Then get 2 x 6 pin to 8 pin. Using just a molex to 6 pin is risky. Going further and using a 6 to 8 pin on top of that is borderline insanity.

You can always check if your GPU can make do with a 6 pin.

Disclaimer: not using an 6 or 8 pin PCIe connector from the PSU itself can result in your house burning down. So try this at your own risk. Personally, due to the risk of fire and unstable power delivery, I would avoid using adaptors like the plague.
 
I know they used to stock the 2x molex to 8 pin adapters, I still have one somewhere. Not sure where you will find one of these today as the PSU's normally come with 8pin connectors these days, so adapters are a bit more scarce

You do get molex to 8 pin, well 2 molex to 8 pin but anyway thats not the issue I have some of them. The issue is the shape of the pins, some are square and some are helical, like so:

Most PSUs have those as standard, the quality ones at least. Buy a new PSU.

Yea, unfortunately that is the only advice I have. I have seen PSUs with 6+2 connectors and then the full on 8 like in your picture. Mine iirc has about 4 x 6+2 and 2 x 8 pins.

I am aware of the risks and so on but my PC has honestly seen no upgrades and very little up time for the last 8 years, the only reason I got the card is because it was a damn bargain and I want to give Assetto Corsa and Project cars a go. Used to be a massive sim racing fan .

Doesn't your PSU have slots to add additional cables? if it does, just buy the 8 pin to 8 pin extension. That is the best I can come up with.

Maybe [MENTION=7905]ponder[/MENTION] can advise?

Nope it's not modular, and its old, too give you an idea of how old i'm still running LGA775 :crylaugh::crylaugh:

But hey it play's GTA V on semi low settings with a GTX450 believe it or not

Molex should be able to deliver 11A per pin assuming the wire gauge is good. 12Vx11A=132W so 2x molex with correct wires should be able to do the 150W of an 8-pin pci-e connector assuming the wires and psu rails are up to scratch.

If you look at 6+2 connector you'll see they just bridge the 2pin off the existing 6pin wires.

This looks like it has enough conductors.

There is the link to the only shop in Joburg that I could find that had the correct setup...(R60) Main issue was the 8pin PCI connector, whilst you can buy all different variants, the shape of the connectors are all different, some square some whatever that other shape is etc..

Word of warning, mine melted in a few months of use.... I then took it apart and put new wires and soldered it back, worked for another few months.. then my PSU died, probably old and was tired at running at a higher power than normal..

Rather just save up and buy a new PSU

I figured out that 2 of the 4 pins used to power the cpu would fit into the 8 pin slot on the gpu. PSU failed to start, I then realised that the terminals are inverted for those sockets.

I took the card out and went to the nearest PC shop to find something to match, eventually got a 1x Molex + 1 x 4 pin CPU (inverted correctly) to 8 Pin that could fit, got home and plugged it all in, no luck, my old trusty 470w Gigabyte PSU now didn't have enough current to boot the Hard drives, they were just ticking and still no boot.

So finally I pluked my moer and ferried around on OLX, found a 570w PSU with dedicated 6 & 8 pin and have been playing Assetto Corsa ever since.
