Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anyone had some advice for me regarding the following:
I'm installing a adsl wifi Router into a massive two story house with ADSL access.

There will be a total of 6 points (1 for each bedroom) that need to run to the router to enable 6 different pc's around the house to have internet access from the router.
There will also be a central printer that needs to be attached to this network.
NO Main server.

Currently I know that ADSL WIFI router are usualy only available in 4 ports.
What would be the best and simplest way to achive this?
Do I use a 4 port adsl wifi router and attach a 8 port switch to the dsl router via one of the ports?

As an extra bonus I would also like to have wifi access around the whole house but cannot have any visible wires or equipment and this house is very large and has allot of concrete.
My thoughts on this would be to maybe attach a wifi router to one or a few of the 6 points in the bedrooms that attach to the main router and this will then give the user the option of connecting either wirelessly or through a wired connection.
My hope is that this may also help to create more of a wireless enviroment around the rest of the house.

Idealy I would like to use netgear equipment because i'm quite used to the netgear interface.

Any advice on the best way to achive this goal or on spcific equipment and exact models would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

1. I assume the printer has a built in print server & LAN port if not you will require an external one.

2. Thats what I will do, I would go for a 8port Gigabit switch incase users want to share files etc.

3. Sound about right but I will keep APs on seperate lan points to the 6 dedicated to the PC. You don't really need wireless routers as as Access Points can extent the current LAN.

Yes, it is simple. cheapest option...

assuming the ADSL router is on the bottom floor.
run a cable neatly out of a window and up to the second floor.
plug the cable into one of the 4 ports on the back of the ADSL router and to the second floor. on the second floor you would have the other switch/hub and distribute from there to the rooms on that floor. Only problem is that leaves you only 3 cables on the ground floor, how many rooms there?

I would put a wireless Access point on each floor. It won't go through the concrete slab of the floor.

can you give us a rough layout of the two floors? a drawn diagram? then we can advise you better. show us where the router will be and which rooms need access.

Thanks allot for the quick advice.
I will put together a more informative description and post back a little later, I just have to shoot out to go and pick up some stuff.

Thanks again for the help so far.

Unfortunately I don’t have the floor plans and dimensions with me but here is the basic very, very large home:

Downstairs -
2 large kitchens
Theatre room
lounge
Dinning room
TV room
Chillout area
Bar
Outside jacuzzi area
Outside pool Area and garden
Small hidden away rack room in the back where all the cables come to

Upstairs -
6 Large rooms all with large bathrooms and large blaconies looking over the outside area
Each room upstairs has a CAT5 cable running through conduits from the upstairs rooms directly to the rack room downstairs.
1 of the rooms has an extra cat5 cable for the printer to be networked directly to the router running downstairs to the rack room .

My initial plan is to place the 4 port WIFI DSL Router with a 8 port switch connected to the router, into the rack room downstairs where all the cables and dsl phone line are coming to.
If I am correct then that should allow everyone internet access through the wired connection.
This should also allow everyone access to the printer.

The next step would to find some way of getting wifi access around the house and by the pool area and garden.
This should be a little bit tricky because I cannot run any wires inside or outside the house.

I was thinking of maybe attaching some sort of small wifi switch to each point in the upstairs rooms as this would hopefully help to create a stronger wifi presence throughout the house.

Like I said it's a little tricky because I am not allowed to run any visible cables no matter what and I cannot have any equipment visible.

In terms of equipment, as I said before, I quite like netgear because i'm quite accustomed to the interface.
If what I mentioned above makes sense then I would most likely need the following:
1 x WIFI ADSL 4 port ROUTER
1 x 8 port switch
6 x WIFI switches
1 x Print server (Assuming that the existing printer does not have one built-in.)

Any help on exactly which brand and model of the above I should get would be really appreciated as I’m trying desperately to minimise any costly errors.

Please let me know what you think of my ideas and feel free to correct me.

You could try the ceiling if there is one. Here you cold run cables, install APs and even drop a cable just below the eves if they want external APs.

Yes there is an outside area and I was considering using some of these wifi plug power booster things around the house and outside but I have 3 problems.
1. Not to sure if the client wants to have these taking up his plugs around the house.
2. Not sure if the clients feels like spending allot on having these things all around the house
3. I have never played with these things and I would hate to go out and get these only to find that they either dont work to well or arent that reliable.

We also have a 4-port DSL Wifi router and a 8 port switch attatched to it for all the pc's in our house. All the cables go through the roof and come together in one room where the DSL line and router ect. are. Only one pc uses wifi, so we positioned the router at a central point in the house to make it a bit easier to establish a rather ok wifi connection.

Good luck with the installation!

CISCO

Hi ,

I know it is not NETGEAR

Look up CISCO AIRONET

Look for the Case-Studies

Such a BBIIIIGGG house & cheapskate on the Communications

The thing is that he's spent so much on all his automation and having the wifi is not a massive priority, although he does want it.
Unfortionatly I wasnt there from the beginning of the build and thats the reason it's making everything that much more complicated.

I was however contimplating the little wifi over power line plugs but I'm a little scepticle on how well this actualy works considering our brilliant eratic power.

Just test it and see, you never know it might work great, or not.

The CISCO stuff really looks fantastic but unfortionatly its just not an option for me.
Right now I'm pretty much in a possition where I have to decide which WIFI ADSL netgear router, netgear 8 port switch and print server will help me out the most in my situation.
If anyone has any suggestions on what models would be best to go for then that would really help.

I may even have to try out those netgear wifi plugs to try and extend the wifi range to selected parts of the house and outside area.
If anyones given these a try, I would love to hear a little more.
