Johannesburg - Eighty taxis were impounded for being unroadworthy in Pretoria's Mabopane, Soshanguve and Garankuwa on Wednesday morning, a Gauteng community safety spokesperson said.

"All taxis found unroadworthy were temporarily suspended pending presentation to the Ipeleng Testing Centre within 14 days - and only when they are fit to be on our roads will they be allowed to operate," said spokesperson Sizwe Matshikiza.

He said although notices had earlier been given to taxi operators to present their taxis at the testing centre to be tested free of charge, the call was ignored.

If operators failed to take their taxis for testing within 14 days, the vehicles' operating licences would be declared invalid. "Operators will then have to pay a testing fee when taking their vehicles for roadworthiness testing," Matshikiza added.
