Does anyone know when the new 80GB PAL console is to be released here in SA?

Should have which the 40GB doesnt:

1) 6 USB ports
2) PS2 backward compatability
3) Flash card reader

This chip in the console is made on 65nm die tech which makes it run more efficiently and cooler than the 60GB model which is being phased out.

Im itching to get the console as MGS4 is out this weekend but dont know whether I should wait for the 80GB instead.

The new slim PS3 is suppose to be released around Christmas of this year. Maybe this 80GB model you're talking about will also be released then.

PS2 backwards compatibility is only available in the launch model and the US and Japan models. I doubt that it will be seen again in PAL territories. Not part of Sony's strategy apparently.

Wait and see I suppose.

The 80GB NTSC supports PS2 bacward compatibility through software emulation...

I would assume the 80GB coming out here would do so as well...

A store here in Gauteng told me about the 80GB but couldnt confirm when they will be released here.

I have heard whispers that Sony will not be releasing the 80Gb version here in sunny SA. Even the 60Gb model is a no show. The larger drive space versions were not bringing in enough money to sustain Sony's expected growth in our region. Guess we have all been screwed by the age old tradition of money making.
There was also some chatter about Sony removing a component (motion chip or something) from the system so they could drop the price. Not that the price dropped by much :(

On the upside I did read a rumour somewhere that Sony are working on full software BC, so there is hope for the little 40Gb.

Sony should just make a BDless console and reap the rewards that way.
Gods know that a lot of 360 players will flock to it as their 2nd console.

I suppose the import merchants will be making a killing, seeing as PS3 games are region-free :D

All the games for the PS3 is on Blu Ray discs, don't think removing the BD player is an option. You can change the hard drive in the PS3, does not void the warranty.

There are already games making use of the full BluRay capacity such as MGS4.
Its supposed to be 50GB of game and 5 GB installed onto the HDD.

eMotion Engine hardware for PS2 BC will be performed by software emulation. This should in theory bring the price down. But the thing is that this software emulation still has issues. Wonder if there could then be a flash upgrade to the 40GB with the emulation software?
