80s alternative music

What exactly defines "alternative" though, seems like a huge gray area.
Anything that is not balls to the wall metal or anything that is basically electrical rock with a dark edge?

to me artists who use music to express themselves is alternative music, obviously there will always be huge overlaps with other areas of music, an alternative artist may become popular for example

so political themes may be expressed (RATM), or deep struggles with emotions (Joy Division), or it can be electronic with a fun undertone (Peaches) or SJW message (Le Tigre)

but despite the wide spectrum of sound, the output almost never seems polished, and the sincerity of the sound is almost immediately felt
 
The problem then is almost everything today is alternative because only a minuscule repetitive selection ever makes mainstream.

Check out the bands nominated for Rock Album/Band of the year at the 2021 Grammy Awards.

Nothing of: Sevendust (with a BRILLIANT cover of Soundgarden's "The Day I Tried to Live", and the CD is great too), Pearl Jam, Green Day, Ozzy Osbourne, Huey Lewis & The News, Nine Inch Nails or even Alanis Morrissette. Instead we have some non-descript rubbish "rock bands" nobody has ever really heard of.
This is what rock has become...
 
I don't really think I like "80's Alternative" per se. All the bands like Extreme & Social Distortion that I would consider "alternative" started in the late 80's so could possibly be considered 90's alternative.

The one possible exception is bands like the Kinks & Jeff Beck & Kansas that started in the 60's or 70's and were still going strong in the late 90's but even though they also did "80's alternative" but they operated on a completely different wavelength..... though I think much of 80's alternative is based upon the foundation they laid.

Maybe it's because what can be called 80's Alternative is so bleak and overly obsessed with lyrics over symphony that I prefer the 70's stuff.

The 90's with things like grunge caused an explosion of alternative music that was built on the 80's stuff but with a "Return" to melody.

I'm discovering this resurgence in 80s sounding new wave, neo new-wave if you will


and ofcourse my favourite one of them all, the video is also amazingly well done
