Hey all,

I need to sort out an 8520 for someone which has mailing issues:

- The existing email account is running on the user's pc via outlook express.
- The existing email account has been loaded onto their BB.
- Logging into the email server's webmail box, it's clear that the mailbox is empty (as no copies are left behind after pulling mail)

Now the problem that they have is when certain clients email them, an "inbox full" error message appears on the senders' side.

What I've noticed is that the BB isn't merely pulling copies of the emails to itself while leaving the main outlook express client to pull all mail. It seems to be hijacking it - and then doesn't pull it because of the inbox full issues...effectively letting the mail get lost. I also cannot find any settings on the BB to force it to leave copies of mail on the server or some such.

Both my iphone & android have never shown any issues pulling mail, but leaving it on the server for my main email client to pull it. Then again, I run gmail which leaves a copy on the server anyway, whereas the BB client is set up on a pop/smtp account which by default does not leave mail on the server.

Any help would be appreciated.

BB uses push mail, the reason you cannot find the setting is because it does not exist. The entire point is for it to leave mail behind so that you can get it on your PC later on.
BB connects via the iMAPI protocol which is a mirror protocol not a download protocol. Its not possible to make a berry download and remove the mail from the server, the function does not and never will exist, would go against the entire principal behind the design. BB does not support pop natively, you will need a 3rd party client to access mail via the pop protocol, the stock client uses IMAP and IMAP only. IF the server does not support IMAP then the phone wuld not be getting its mail.

A blackberry allows you to get your mail on the move when you are away from your computer, but eventually you do go back to said computer and for all business users and a vast majority of personal users they would want the mail to be accessible not he computer again at a later stage, either for reference purposes or because it cannot be read on the phone, thats why the phone has 2 delete options, 'From Phone' 'From Phone and Server' that would be the 1 and only way to remove the mail from the server, but it will also remove it from the device.

Androids and iphones work the same way unless you specifically set them up to use the pop3 protocol and disable the save copy on server option which is now set at 7 days as a standard on most desktop mail clients too for the simple reason that some servers do not have an IMAPI option and pop3 is faster, however some users may have more than one machine on which they wish to access the mail.

Thanks very much for the reply. It makes complete sense and is how I expected the phone to operate.

The fact that mail isn't coming through worries me given the "inbox full" error response. Despite logging in via the webmail interface to ensure that the inbox isn't full. Which it shouldn't be, given that outlook pulls it off the server via pop3 without leaving a copy. What is odd is that there are 2 other accounts of the same mail server on the same outlook installation, and both of them pull mail just fine.

I'll try to concentrate on the pc client to get it working first, thanks!

 Blackberry supports POP natively. I used it for years before we switched over to iMAP servers and the functionality is still there.

Telkom email accounts still only use POP and I set up an account on my blackberry without a problem.
