8600gts Help

Evening guys,

I am hoping that there is a Graphics card super genius on this forum somewhere cause I am totally lost...

Got myself a 8600 GTS 256MB card and have had the most confusing time of my life ever since... Some games don't play properly, others play well but not nearly what the benchies say it should...

So I have been battling along for like a month. Then i did a dxdiag thingy and it reports my card as having 976MB of memory??? Totally mindf#cked!!

Is this normal? Anyone else got a 8600GTS?

Help me someone please!!!

/begs...

edit: oh have the latest drivers installed, even tried optimized drivers...

The extra RAM is just system RAM being "allocated" to your graphics card. Unfortunately, under Vista and with a 86xx series card, it gives the highest allocation of 720MB.

Hmm now your actual problem.. could be Vista related, maybe the games have a patch available?

Could you give the rest of your system specs, it would help..

Nope not vista, had XP SP2 on prior to Vista...

System Specs:
AMD 64 3800X2 (I know its not the best)
2GB Kingston RAM CL5
250GB SATA HDD
6100M2MA-RS2H Mobo (also a budget buy)

K i know that my setup isnt the greatest but I went from 70+ frames in Quake 4 @1024x768 Pretty much maxed on my 7600GT to 20-30 frames. And in Doom 3 I get 8 frames.

I could handle it if I got a crap card but my real issue is that My frames dont change in the games if I change settings (vSync isn't on and in the Nvidia control panel everything is set to "application controlled"), but in Company of heroes I get 50+ frames at pretty high settings. So from what I can tell the card is working...kinda...

If this sounds confusing, join the club...

Call of Juarez also get shocking frames 20-30...

I got a 8800GTS and had the same problem till i tried another version of nVidia forceware. Currently on 162.18 and im on XP x64

Ok. It might be processor related or it could just be driver issues. Did you uninstall ALL the 7600 drivers before installing the 8600 drivers? Are you overclocking anything at the moment?

No previous version conflicts, was a clean install of Vista. Used a Driver Cleaner between installs of the Optimized Drivers and Nvidia 162.18 (i think its the latest version).

Nah way to dumb to overclock... :) Cant even get the think working at stock speeds :)

Yeah thats what I initially thought but I get very good results in Company of heroes, maybe 10 frames less than on gamespot benchmarks and they run on hectic hardware... Core2's and corsair xtreme RAM and so on...

Ok, do you have the latest mobo drivers?

I had similar problems until I installed new nforce drivers, though, it was in XP.

Did you read the forceware release notes? There may be an issue with the GTS and vista, or something, they usually put a fix in there. Helped solve all my problems :D

Will give it a go, but had same problems on Vista and XP, but the more i think about it the more i think the problem is my Mobo, got an onboard vga card that for some reason I cant switch off in the BIOS... Correction, it is off in the BIOS but windows insists on picking it up... So might be some kinda conflict...

mmm... Interesting... I've got the same basic chipset mobo and a 8600GT, but XP doesn't detect the 6100 after I disabled it, but I don't know if that would cause problems.

I get decent frames in call of juarez, depending on setting, anywhere between 25 and about 50, but it's still at highish setting...

Maybe look for updated mobo firmware?
Check to see if Vista really sees the 6100 in its device list.

It is definitely there, windows update even wants to download an updated 6100 drivers... will look for updated firmware for my mobo...

XP for the win when it comes to games, vista is still very buggy with games esp with nvidia cards. I lose at least 15-20 fps from XP to vista with my 8800gts so I stick to XP when I wanna play games and then Vista on a seperate HDD for when SP1 and decent drivers are released :)

But it's not the issue, he had XP on before, with the same problem.

I don't see much difference when it comes to games on Vista, maybe a few FPS, but new drivers close the gap with every release. Some DX10 cards were faster under Vista a few versions back on Nvidia drivers.

Anyway.. there could be some dual core issues with a few games? Darkwater made a thread about it in the gaming section a while back.

Okay, got it pretty much sorted last night, did a BIOS update and played around a bit more in the BIOS, also (after much struggling) was able to remove the 6100 from windows. So all seems to be going well...

Now getting 50+ frames in Call of Juarez at max settings... :) Quake 4 still acting a bit strange sitting at 60 frames and never moves like Vsync is on, but its not. Not really worried with that as I was getting k@k frames before, could just be a Vista thing...

Thanks for all the help guys!!! Much Appreciated!!!!
