Hi

Can anyone please explain why the core is running at 600Mhz and not 700Mhz as per ASUS's specs?

The card gets very hot, is it better to leave it at 600Mhz?

Thanks.

Don't know if this is the case but I had a Radeon 9800GT that did the same, ran lower when doing nothing and only when I played a game would it run at the correct speed. Maybe check it out?

Asus has various models of the 8800GT, thus at different clock speeds.

It could also be a power saving mode (like intel speedstep) which i doubt.

Good luck.

I checked. Was running RivaTuner whilst playing Company of Heroes. It increase the fan speed to compensate for the higher temp, but clock speed stays constant at 600Mhz. Thanks for the input though.

I realise that ASUS has various models, but I have the exact one according to the specifications. The ASUS 8800 GT (Company of Heroes edition). I wouldn't know how to check whether it is a power saving mode though :(

Download GPU-Z keep it running in the background on the temp monitoring graph tab and go in and out of a game to see what clocks it changes to in 3D..

I think you have the 600MHz version :(

If it were underclocking itself in 2D then it would have shown that in GPU-Z as the default clock

With my GPU it underclocks itself in 2D to 300MHz and the default is 775MHz.

So in GPU-Z it shows 300MHz as the core clock in 2D but when i run ATi Tool or any other 3D app the core increases to 775MHz

Thanks again for both sets of advice.

I checked and the core speed stays at 600MHz.

I feel a little dissapointed :(

What is my best option for cleaning out the dust?

How do I know how much dust is behind the cover?

Don't think there is any warranty...

Not just the stock cooler. It has that cover over the board, like most new GPU's. And I think there might be lots of dust behind this cover.

If u are using rivatuner u should be able to control the temps, my 8800GT used to run right up and over 100C with stock fan control, with rivatuner, set up speed/fan profiles, never went over 80C after. Besides the 8800GT is a hot running chip ... full stop!

Glad to hear it - gives me a bit of comfort. Got freaked out the other night when it hit 95 degrees though.

I've now setup the variable fan on RivaTuner and it only goes to 90 degrees. Still concerns me though. Might take off the cover tomorrow and see if I can clean it out. Limited risk as I bought it second hand and have no warranty.

get a vf900 for it, cheap, like R250.. n watch those temps drop dramatically..
