8km link but only getting 80kbs

Hi all

I need some advice from those experts.i connected two sennao ap's in bridge mode (point to point) with 2 grid 22db also, i have good line of sight.

Question:

Is it normal for me to get 80kbs across my network or am i doing smething wrong.

i get a communication strength of 72% both sides.the distance as mentioned is 8 km.

any help in this regard will help

Wow, thats a nice one! We are gonna try something similar soon (erm, in about 4 months time) so at least we know its possible.

What channel are you guys on?

Any other settings you can post here?
 
hi

i had to use channel 14.link is good but i am not shure what i should get accross the network.takes a long time to copy something from my buddy.10 meg takes about 6min.

if u going to do something similar i whould suggest to overkill on all ur hardware.

any advice would be welcome on the distance and the amount of data accross the network

We currently have a 1.2km link up which we use daily. Our speeds vary between 500kB/s and 1.3MB/s, which is ok but we would like it faster. These speeds were only attainable by using something like DC++ and setting up a hub using YnHub. Windows copy proved very iffy. DC++ also provides a certain amount of compression. There might be other better ways of doing it, but this is fun and everybody on the Wired LANs can join in.

We are now running on channel 1, after channel 11 proved to be the root of all our problems (actually Telkom is the root of all our problems, but not in this context). We would like to give all the channels a go to note the speeds but for the life of us we cannot get this right (using OpenWRT), and it now always reverts back to channel 1. if you have suggestions how we can improve our speeds further, without going out to buy more antennae, then please let me know.

Do you get much packet loss? Maybe try a nice big test (like 100 or so packets, or more if you want to).

Rodent and Daffy were right, wireless IS fun!
 
What speed are the routers currently set to? 11mbps, 36mbs, 54mbs?
Have you tried going up and down through the available speed settings to find the best results?
 
yes i have tried playing around with 11, 32 and 54 but does not improve the network speed, it only stabilised it in other words less packet loss.i left it on 802b and set to 11mbs.

i transfered a 600meg file and took whole night and a bit of day too.but it got through.

i heard by somone that the more connections you have the more your through put gets devided.eg if you running 4 access points on a wifi network at 11mbs it will be divisable by 4.

I can only suggest that you try every channel, and speed setting.
eg: on the main Jawug network, my link to MaSoN gets 8mbit on channel 6, but 2mbit on channel 4, because of interference.
Make sure your Antennas are polarized correctly (ie: both have the gridlines the same way, and not 90degrees rotated from each other)

Lastly (you may not like this suggestion) Try dropping the speed to 2mbit. The different modulation techniques will help you out. 1/2mbps use the same, 5.5/11mbps use the same (theres tons of them, I dont know them all off the top of my head).
Try some of the lower G speeds too, the OFDM modulation might help.
 
we've set up a 11km link using 2 x senao bridges and 2 x 22dbi grids - got close to 11mbit throughput on it with a nice 3ms average latency- so at least you know it's possible. what are your current settings?
 
great stuff.then there must be something im doing wrong.settings are as follows.

GENERAL
wireless mode:80211b
channel:14
transmission Rate:best automatic

ADVANCED
Fragment Threshold:2346
RTS Threshold:2432

and the rest is all default settings.also when i try to connect with one side as ap mode and the other side as bridge multipoint it does not connect, however when i make both AP mode with wds they connect but still with the same speed 80kbs.

ok for those who are interested i seem to be getting 1400Kbs :) .i changed my sennao AP's to linksys WRT54G, but here comes the problem, i am receiving a lot of time outs than that of the sennao ones, which was pretty stable at 80-90Kbs.the person i bought it from told me that he updated the firmware to handle 251mw.I think this could possibly be the problem.oh and now and then the AP just seem to shut down and require a power reset(Linksys).

Anyone got some ideas?

Check which version of wrt54g you have. The v2.2 has some memory timing issues or something. Too fix this, one overclocks the router from 200mhz to 216mhz (No higher).

I dont think you should run the router at full power try keep it bellow 200mw (legal limit 100mw EIRP, almost imposible to obey using antennas). Besides heat, pushing the output power up creates more noise for yourself. I sometimes find better thoughput at 100mw.

Which firmware are you using?

EDIT: Just BTW, iv got the wrt54g V2.2

216Mhz, is the speed of the CPU.

Yes, very careful. I read from many places that is the speed that you should change it to. You make a mistake and you will probably have to buy a new wrt54g

To change it you will need to telnet (or SSH) into your wrt54g and type.

nvram commit
reboot

Someone please check this. I dont want someone messing up their wrt54g.

I see no difference with it on or off.
 
sorry i was mistaken the firmware is called Freeman--Basic 1.0.2

does ur advice still apply?
 
Should still apply, im using an older version (Alchemy v1). The problem that this fixes, as i understand is a hardware problem.
