8ta betrayed us!

I have been an 8ta mobile customer for over 2 years. To start with, I was very impressed with their service; but now, it seems that 8ta is total trash.

At the start, I was consistently getting over 10mbps. As time progressed, at times I was getting 10+ mbps, yet at other times I was sometimes getting timeouts and low speeds. I raised this with support, and they could give me no answers. They did send a technician out during office hours (I had to get time off work) and as predicted, at that time there were no problems. The problem only happened occasionally.

Ok so now I need to tell you about the antenna. Mine is a fixed-installation connected-to-desktop-pc-scenario. ADSL-replacement (because ADSL is a complete joke, that's another story involving a massive Telkom refund. But that's another story). So the placement is not relevant to what I'm saying -- there has been no change in reception, and I've moved my modem exactly 0.0M from two years ago, to date. Reception is not the issue.

So from the promised 21.6mbps, I initially got 10mbps consistently and I was pleased. It was fast and not expensive (8ta 10+10 package). Sometimes I got terrible service, raised this with support, who had no idea. No idea at all, on how to proceed with this. Like I said, they did send a tech but this was useless as he arrived during one of those in-business-hours times when I had no problems. He tested my setup and was impressed with the speeds he was getting.

So anyway, this completely rules out any issues with my 3G equipment or signal coverage. I can get well over 10mbps to the network.

So, the problem lies with the network.

For the past several months I've had insanely bad connectivity, and I'm considering taking these guys to court. The majority of my connection requests now get rejected; When I do get a connection, speeds are terrible, around 10kbps. Bittorrent hardly works at all -- and in fact, despite my best efforts, there's no chance I could possibly get the 20 gigs that 8ta promises me. I've completely given up on customer support, because they know nothing at all.

The vast majority of my web requests either time out or give me some kind of error. The simplest of pages take minutes to appear, or (more often) give errors. I do not have any trojans that are taking my bandwidth -- I can prove this, having run many, many network traces to try to diagnose this. Negative result. The only possible answer is that my ISP is hopelessly inadequate. I am a very experienced software engineer, and I know what I'm doing. It's simply the ISP's fault (8ta).

My question is: does the CPA cover this scenario? Can I take them to court for inability to deliver on their contractual obligations? I am very angry & I will do this.

My personal belief is that they are completely over-subscribed, and unable to service the requests of their existing customers.

Do I have legal recourse? Should I just dump 8ta in favour of a better service, in spite of it costing me more? Should I embark on an 8ta smear campaign? (they deserve it!!) or .. ?

I just want reliable, fast internet at a decent price. Is that too much to ask for?

My first question: what times does it happen?

My 8ta normally goes to the dogs from 19:00 to 21:00 and then is fine.

I only get home from work at 7pm. That's when I need my 8ta to work. I used to get 10mbps and be able to game on my HSPA+ conneciton but for about the past six months, same story here. Tech came during the day, everything is fine. But my local speeds at night are about 1mbps and international are around 0.01mbps and high packet loss.

I was quite impressed with 8ta's customer service when I brought this to their attention though. The techie arrived the next day. 8ta admitted the towers were congested and gave me the option to prematurely end my contract without any penalties.

I think this sums it up rather nicely.

8ta started up with no customers, so they had to get customers from the other providers. R199 for 10GB is a pretty sweet deal & they got the customers they were looking for. Unfortunately now there are too many customers for their existing network, hence the sharp drop in speed and performance.

I'm experiencing exactly the same as all of you do - during the day it's fine, but after 7 pm till 11 pm, it becomes unusable and you can just as well switch it off.

I doubt it if 8ta will fix it anytime soon, cos they didn't really get huge capital with the R199 deal & reception is still very limited for the internet 5 promo deal.

Maybe things will improve in the future, we can only hope.

I am experiencing the same thing ... I have had technicians out 4 times and still have not received feed back (I have even pm'd the rep)

I noticed that the last few months have been horrible with both stability and QoS ... I can't even browse properly if I have a download running whereas in the past I could game over my connection, game and browse at the same time, etc.

Last year I had -69dbm to -73dbm signal strength with speeds of 8mb+ (10mb+ when it was going well) ... Now I have a pretty constant -83dbm+ and barely ever have speeds in the 4mb range and when I do it is so unstable the speed matters little.

As long as the product works I am happy. 4megs I can live with, not sure what the hype is about having max speed if data is overpriced if it were reasonable then I can understand.

I also noticed as of lately QoS isn't the same. Like today I had huge packet loss or no internet connectivity at all

I am happy with 4mbps ... but the problem is the stability ... constant disconnects or inconsistent speeds/ping ... you could have a 100mb line but it wont make up for crappy service

so glad i got adsl instead or purchasing another 60+60. i used to get 5mb and over but now only just over 1mb. colleague didnt want his horrible 8ta data so he gave it to me. i thought it would improve my gaming speeds but its the same like my 1mb adsl. that coupled with the news server error just killed 8ta for me.

My story's the opposite - my signal was bad, but workable to start with. A few months later my signal increased a bit and my speeds went up. I think they must have built a new tower close to me.

I too have the same experience with 8ta and am in the process of moving to another ISP (ADSL) just to get some data coverage.

I too have the same experience with 8ta and am in the process of moving to another ISP (ADSL) just to get some data coverage.

I'm suffering with the same symptoms.
After 7pm the 8ta network in my area literally grinds to a halt.
I connects then it stalls and cuts off after about 30 seconds.
Pages don't load properly. My modem constantly fights between edge and 3g.
It only gets better after 10pm. I bought this to surf at home in the evenings
when I get home. It isn't fit for purpose anymore.
I'm going to change providers.

There id definitely some issues!
I have 2 SIM. 60+60 and 10G contract.
Modem is 1820 with external antenna - -79dB signal.
60+60 - 9.1M speed
10G - 1.8M
60+60 with smartphone - 6-9M

Any ideas?
