RAID is for redundancy. I highly doubt home users are going to arrange cloud or offsite backups...

I mentioned the best backup solution for home users, just mirror your drives.
 
Interesting thing is that WD/HGST needed to fill their drives with helium to get up to 6TB, Seagate have gone to 8 without the need for it.

Better: Cobian Backup and an external, a setup I've sold hundreds of people on.

Another scenario that will completely **** a RAID array - ransomware. Oh and don't forget accidental deletion. RAID will ONLY save your ass against a hard drive failing. Anything else is going to need a backup.
 
WRT to raid - I am currently using a Synology with SHR (it's a hybrid raid where you can mix-and-match drives, but provides you with more storage compared to traditional raid - http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.php/What_is_Synology_Hybrid_RAID?) and I have had 4 out of 5 drives fail in quick succession over a 10 day period. Drives are all 4TB NAS drives and only 12 month old.

Unless you have a ton of cash, I doubt that anyone will be able to mirror a 5*4TB NAS (I am relying that nothing happens, and was in a complete panic when the drive errors came through via SMS).

BTW: Look at how much a 6TB drive costs - I think the Seagate 6TB goes for over 6K. I wish the OP's article with reference of a cost of R250/TB was true :-(
