hi,

Is anyone else having problems with battery life on this phone? On OS6 battery life is like a day compared to 3 days on my 8520. I've turned off wifi, feeds anything that could use Bis but suggestions are always welcome. Also bbm lags quite a bit messages don't go through in correct order and sometimes don't go through at all. I'm very disappointed in OS6 so far, over complicated not very user friendly (even for a geek). I'm quite interested in your opinions upon this phone, are these merely OS6 teething problems perhaps?

Thx

Hi and welcome.
Do you have any other applications running in the background (Press and hold your menu key down. You will get BB IM,Browser,Home Screen,Phone and messages which are normal.Apps like facebook,Twitter running in the background does consume more power.
Is your 3G switched on all the time?
Are you using an "approved" OS6 install or a leaked one? The leaked ones tend to have battery issues.

No background apps running,
It's the official os 6 from rim think .318 asia or something

found the 3g option will give it a go thx

.318 is a leaked version with numerous problems, update to 380(official) or 424(also a leak). 3G will drain your battery, especially if you have it set to 3g and 32 cuz then its constantly searching for the fastest possible network. If you know you have good 3G coverage then set it to 3G only, if not 2G only.

As for over complicated and not use friendly, you can definitely not be a geek then because i know layman, or woman actually, who found it much better than OS5 and far easier to use, took me all of an hour to figure everything and about 2 days to have memorized the locations of all the important settings and sections int he options.

Yeah thx for that just didn't think it was needed to turn off 3g just to conserve the battery, i mean isn't that one of the selling points of it....So can anyone say retarded?

As for user friendliness say for example you want to type an sms, normally i had it setup to just have everything in messages u would press bb button and choose compose text...where on os 6 you have to go an entire separate menu i.e "compose other" let's examine this on say a nokia "push text button...type HI MA". Also u have these restarted menus now and with the trackpad it easily scrolls towards next downloads menu...say retarded again?

So yeah your right i am obviously not a geek rather someone with common sense to know that it takes u 3 times longer to just type a simple sms....What was user frienldly defined as again?

Sorry if thats harsh but this is the truth of it a Blackberry is suppose to be cream of the crop yet i'm not seeing this.

-Sent from my blackberry with one hell of a hassle

Well your problem with SMS is your pressing the blackberry key, if you'd just hit the middle key ud get the compose popup with all the options, the reason for the compose other, is because blakcberry integrates all message applications including facebook, twitter, msn, yahoo, google, pingchat, whatsapp, and a hole mess of other options, not to mention the defaults with PP of MMS, Text, BBIM, PIN, that each user can install to his choice, to have a menu with 20 possible message option is illogical especially on a small screen.

As for turning off 3G, thats something thats been known since the invention of 3G, 3G uses 2.5x the battery power irrespective of the brand of handset, its this little thing known as higher frequencies use more power, thats why the new UMTS handsets coming out will be using the 900mhz band instead of the 2100mhz band for 3G and HSDPA. Logic also dictates that there is not 100% 3G coverage so having a phone set to choose fastest possible speed will require more network scanning and therefor use more battery power. Its not a blackberry thing, its a cellphone thing.

Blackberry is a business communication device, sms is not a priority, ask any BB user and you will see that sms/mms are the 2 option they use the least, email, pin and BBIM are the most common features used for messaging on a BB, and if you went directly to your sms inbox instead of your email inbox then the compose other would have email and the compose email would actually say compose text. Its this little thing known as logic, do you open outlook or thunderbird or gmail and expect to see a button saying compose sms or do you expect to see compose mail?

Don't blame the device if you cant use it properly, because you most certainly do not need to be a geek to think logically because thats how OS6 was designs, to prioritize the most logical option based on your current location or are you 1 of those people who goes to McDonalds expecting to be able to buy lobster?

I have had 3g since a nokia N70 and that lasted way past 5 days. And even with the popup its still bb button hold middle choose text msg with irritating trackpad that jumps up and down (the four year old nokia just had one). I don't know what line of work you are in but text messages are just as vital as as any other form of communication i.e. Internet banking.

So therefore to draw conclusion define: User Friendly and define: FANBOI!

Ive had 3G since the 6680, if it lasted 5 days with 3g it would of lasted over 10 with EGDE, simple as that. Besides your comparing ancient phone with almost no features and pathetic software. I used to love nokia too, until they started releasing **** into the market, phones riddled with bugs, most of which were never fixed. The N70 was Nokia's poster child for poor design. SMS may be vital to those who still use it, but with pingchat and whatsapp providing cross platform instant messaging modeled after BBIM text conventional text messaging has become a thing of the past.

Just do yourself a favor and go back to your nokia. 3 clicks for an SMS, my mother has a nokia and you have to go Menu>Messaging>Compose Message>(Text Message, MMS Message, E-Mail) by my count thats 1 more than on the blackberry, if you take out the need to go to menu then its 3, so hows that any better. If your that lazy set 1 of your convenience keys to remove those extra 2 clicks.

As the saying goes, Intel inside ID10T outside.

Idiot.....Now how has this thread come to that?

EXACTLY 5 days....SO WHY DOES A 5 year old (and i agree crap) phone do something that a new SUPER DUPPER GREAAAT smartphone can't?
And the cheap nokias do that but we talking about comparing a R3000 phone, thus we should compare it towards the relevant target field? (and those nokia have like 6 convience keys btw)

Do myself favour use convience keys.....Thx o but wait convience key, compose option is only for email....Wait didn't you say it took 2 days to memorise this...hope u not writing an exam on this?

And don't say put text option on your main screen cos what's the point in a central and integrated mail box? And if u do still have to scroll down to compose text...

The point is why do we pay for these things, and no one ever listens to the consumer? And trust me i know how to google, OS6 is a minefield of problems and users complaining. and after charging the battery to full and then not using it for anything today the battery is now at 65%....YES 3g is off.

Maybe it's just me, maybe mine is faulty but still the point is it's not an improvement over the basics (phone, message ) and after all it is called A PHONE!

It's an opinion use it don't use (i know u won't). Also please don't get so upset over a piece of plastic i'm not insulting your spouse ( although with some people i wonder) we just talking idiot (me) to GEEK (obviously you) on is this really a better phone then i think. And the reason i'm not posting this on sites like crackberry because of being called an idiot, and how dare i insult their "loved ones". Besides it's lame not having a credible arguement to one point and then acting so hurt? Thx for your help so far....

Just to add to my point reading this article http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-adding-and-customizing-contacts-os6 yesterday i was meeting with a client and when i wanted his contact details i would normally just type the number (in os 5) the press bb button add contact bobs uncle it's done. In OS6 it doesn't work like that when u type anything it searches and adding a contact needs to be go to Contacts click add contact (bear in mind u probably scrolled miss about 5 times at home screen due to favorite menu etc. ) by this time my client was getting very annoyed with me playing on my "gameboy" and said just sms me a contact card and i literally shuddered to think how !@#$ i was gonna do that. Sure those menus look pretty as hell but business minded folk don't want perdy we want to go home before rush hour traffic!
The battery issue sounds normal on .380 http://forums.crackberry.com/f216/memory-leak-6-0-0-380-9300-a-563759/
Will give it a week then chuck it for something else.

Because 5 years ago phones did not have always on internet connection like the blackberry, iphone, and any android handset, possibly the new WinMob 7 as well, batteries lasted that long because the phones never made use of the internet 24/7 like the modern day smart phone do. With all the upgrades batteries has still been the 1 thing thats been left behind, they literally cant make them any bigger and keep the phones small. This is why they have started releasing UMTS handset, Vodacom, MTN and Cell C already support UMTS. UMTS is the upgrade to HSDPA allowing up to 21.6mbps network at a similar frequency to GSM, this will allow handsets to have the high speed internet without the major battery drain, something current and future handsets really need. UMTS also allows the high speed network to travel up to 3x further greatly extending network coverage without needing new towers or signal boosters.

And the cheap nokias do that but we talking about comparing a R3000 phone, thus we should compare it towards the relevant target field? (and those nokia have like 6 convience keys btw)

Its not a nokia so no point comparing it, nokia makes outdated mainstream handsets, they need to move away from symbian as its a dead OS, its not open source so it will never reach the diverse potential of blackberry, iphone and android, the only advantage nokia has is battery life, but thats simply because its features are still int he stone age.

Do myself favour use convience keys.....Thx o but wait convience key, compose option is only for email....Wait didn't you say it took 2 days to memorise this...hope u not writing an exam on this?

stop being lazy, ur scrolling and clicking 3 times, it it takes u more than 1 second then your too slow. its not a nokia, stop expecting it to work like 1, if you wanted a phone to work like you nokia you should of bought a nokia

The point is why do we pay for these things, and no one ever listens to the consumer? And trust me i know how to google, OS6 is a minefield of problems and users complaining. and after charging the battery to full and then not using it for anything today the battery is now at 65%....YES 3g is off.

the minefield of problem to which you refer is all leaked releases, the 9300 got an official release not even 2 weeks ago,t he 9700's was released yesterday. They are leaks, aka beta, problem are expected, the reason for the complaining is so that the problems can be solved for the official release. That battery drain is a bit high i will admit, mine last 2-3 days with normal usage. Normal culprits would be not having done the proper charge cycle when you got the phone or an excess of applications running in the background.

Maybe it's just me, maybe mine is faulty but still the point is it's not an improvement over the basics (phone, message ) and after all it is called A PHONE!

As i said before, sms messages is the least used feature with blackberry, since i got mine i went from over 300 sms's per month to barely 20, and you will hear similar drops if you speak to other berry users, email and instant messaging has made it almost redundant.

It's an opinion use it don't use (i know u won't). Will give it a week then chuck it for something else.

The phone number thing i will give you, that was a daft change, as for adding a new contact its a simple matter of going to contacts, there is a new contact button on the very top, yes its slightly inconvenient, if your scrolling miss then just drop your trackpad sensitivity
The battery issue however is not normal on .380, its the official release with only 1 fault and its unrelated to the battery or memory, its a option glitch that occasionally appears when using the drop down network settings on top, this was repaired in .424 I was on .380 till this morning when i upgraded to .424 so your battery issues are not related to the OS, there are dozens of users here on mybb using .380, and there was only the 1 complaint about the network options glitch among all of them, they have all agreed the phone is much faster, much more user friendly and much better battery life. With OS5 at best i got 2 days, with OS6 im getting up to 3 and my usage has increased as i was on holiday when i got the phone and had half my email accounts disabled and ignored the phone most of the time

Maybe just downgrade back to OS5, because the only complaint worth any merit is the battery and thats not OS related, taking barely twice as long to click text message is not even a worthy complaint, its not like they hid it away and if you were like many BB users who install a whole mess of other messaging clients then you would fully understand the need for that, that was a complaint from OS5 that every messaging app added a send option into the messaging menu as the messaging area was centralized which included msn, gtalk, facebook, yahoo, aim, bbim, pin, facebook, myspace and who knows what the hell else, and there are those who install all these apps and ended up with a menu with 10/20 different send options, and just because you and i are not bored enough to use all those bloody apps does not mean a vast number of users are not, you say they doen listen to the clients, but your 1 voice, just like me and blackberry is the 2nd or 3rd most popular handset on the planet, if 1 million say leave it as it is and 10 million say reduce the menu clutter obviously they will listen tot he 10 million.

So what if it does not have 6 convenience keys like the nokia, the nokia does not have 6-12 on screen options you can just flick to with a scroll. You thinky our berry has bad battery life, you should try an iphone, making it through a working day is impressive feat for that battery hungry play toy. The samsung galaxy s phone for example ships with 2 batteries and a stand-alone battery charger in the box, if that does not say bad battery life i don't know what does.

The 3G itself is not that bad an abuser of battery power, its the 2G & 3G setting that causes the problem cause its constantly scanning for the best network signal, if you know you in a 3G safe area set it to 3G only, i did that and lost maybe 2/3 hours of battery compared to 2G, but setting it to auto select cuts by up to 40%. The blakcberry also uses compression in its browser so for normal browsing you will barely notice the dif between 2g and 3g, its only downloading were you really notice it.

Any smartphone you buy these days will have lousy battery life, its the downside of the always on internet connection that has been adopted by every manufacturer except nokia.

So basically all i'm hearing is can't do it live with it it's not so bad. Just be lucky you have a blackberry... Well i have an iphone 4 but none of them really fit the needs of being a phone first and a gadget second. Oh and lol at the whole bbm instant messaging revolution this is south africa try bbm the Master of the court. Try bbm SARS....LOL even try bbm my executive director...

I'm gonna try the .438 leak perhaps that will shut my trap. But as for the battery, i just want it to last as long as my 8520 did 3 days. And we could argue about this all day but the truth is most people never ask why do we buy something that doesn't work efficiently we just love knowing it says blackberry.

And going back to OS5....WHY i rushed out to get this whole OS 6 gimmick because i thought new OS might just fix the small annoyances with OS 5 but guess the more things change the more they stay the same.

And as for the whole open source debate, developers don't even want to touch a blackberry because it's to difficult to develop apps for example skyfire completely withdrew their browser for bb, Opera mini totally sucks on bb (and it quite good on nokia E series) evernote just has no point and the new dropbox.....let's just say it's something.

But i dont care about it being a gadget i want it for the awesome keyboard ( to type emails and sms) call people. On a side note whats up with the emails looking like a 8 bit dos app? The gmail app supplements quite well for reading emails but still the main feature of the phone is emails right?

Anyway i'm just ranting out of my ass and getting bored of this whole topic.
