I'd personally rather get an inverter, battery and charger.

What I would like to do. Anyone able to sell me what I need?West Rand. Flat screen and decoder. Adsl router and laptop. Seperate times if need be.
Let me know if you can help..

how long will the 1500w last

i dont want my backup power to give into load shedding also

Depends on the size of the battery, AFAIK you've got to figure out the inverters current draw

Tell us more please? Why not a generator? What is a good solution in these dark times?

A generator is prone to spikes in the power output, especially if it has no automatic voltage regulation (AVR) and is not recommended for sensitive electronic equipment. In addition it does not have any filtration circuitry to keep the power clean from nasties from the generator.

Rather install a UPS that will take care of the filtration, generation and regulation of the power output and also protect your equipment from power surges.
The battery capacity (AmpereHour - Ah) rating together with the equipment current / power draw will determine how long the setup will run. Therefore the suggestion to rather use the generator to charge the UPS batteries. The generator will supply 220V to the input of the UPS which will then clean up the power and charge the 12 / 24V batteries.

Besides, would you rather have a noisy generator running and polluting all the time or a silent UPS with just a fan whirring in the background?

Recommended Generator/UPS and estimated cost of such a setup?

+1 Just tell me where and what to buy, online preferably. I want to click and get on with my day and be rid of load shedding. I want to power a pc/adsl router and 2 lights.

For UPS that will run computer equipment / a screen:
APC - best you can get with great warranty. Model depends on your budget, what power you are going to draw (as in Watts) and how long you want the system running for. I would say ball park figure R4000 upwards for a decent one.

For the generator: One from Builders Warehouse will do just fine.

I will post pics of my setup if you want - I have 3 UPS's running for different uses / parts of the house. I have a Victron heavy duty UPS which is able to run for about 6 hours - but that costs around R20k.

If the only use of the UPS is to "clean up" the power, won't the cheapest one + a generator work just fine?

You can do that however when it comes to the lights and the router you will have to modify a multi-plug to fit into the power outlet of the UPS.
I would recommend LED light bulbs as they will give more light and consume less power.

Will find you a link...

A UPS doesn't just clean up power...it also generates the 220V when there is no power. A cheap UPS will work but may not last for 4 hours of load shedding.
The generator is there to help provide power to charge the batteries when the batteries are depleted.

Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninterruptible_power_supply

Recommended UPS models:

To achieve the best run time I would select the APC BackUPS 1500 with Extended run time battery which will last a decent amount of time to keep the boredom at bay. I currently run a few network switches, my BitCo internet equipment and a WiFi router. Estimated runtime on the display is around 800min based on the above power draw. In your scenarios it may be less due to a PC being hooked up.

You are looking at around R7300 for that setup.

For that price i'm rather going to go fill up some gas cylinders and charge my 3DS & Tablet. Screw that I'll keep my money. A Laptop for movies/series in the living room when the TV is dead

It was a ballpark figure...you might find cheaper options out there and my recommendation is for my use. You can select lower rated models for a better price.

Thank you for the help it's just I had an epiphany... I'll go outside and enjoy the fresh air if there's no power during the day and I can use mobile devices like phones & tablets if i'm bored during load shedding at night I absolutely don't need power to occupy myself.
